Short Story: 94 DI with 260K miles, right rear axle area occasionally makes a crunching/grinding noise. Happens for a few seconds then stops. Obviously, something is wrong, but anyone have any ideas? |

Jake, Did you pull the wheel off to inspect? If so....what did you see? Paul |

Paul: I have not pulled the wheel yet, my garage is full from my recent move and ther will be a high of 2 F today! I am thinking wheel bearing, but I guess that it could be an axle |

When the axle bearings gave up on my 94 it gave a very, screachy, "ringing" sound, almost sounded like a dragging muffler or a drive shaft. Apparently the axle housing affords some nice accoustics that give bad bearings a very un-bearing-like sound. If the noise changes in pitch, intensity or degree when you touch the brakes it may be something as simple as brakes (pads, or caliper) but if it groans and squeels on or off the brakes it's probably bearings. Easy to replace, it's a very logical, smart design. -Jim (Victor Mature) |
