Ok, on saturday night, I went to start my 89 RRC for the first time in about 4wks, and of course, the battery was 99% dead. This was to be expected from the lack of driving, no big deal. So, I got a charge from a battery pack charger, and she started right up, no problem. I then proceeded to drive around for about 20 minutes, got some gas, and drove around for another 10 minutes. I then parked the car until this morning when I was going to move it again...until I tried to turn it over and the battery was once again 99% dead. I have a brand new alternator in the rover, its less than a year old, along with a new battery that is less than a year old (Federation Battery...approx 730cca) Whats the deal here??? Did I just not let the alternator charge the battery enough when I drove it the for about half an hour???I haven't experienced this before??? Should I just charge it again and drive it longer??? Or do I need to drive it like 1hr today, then 1 hr, tomorrow...or what??? As always, any help is appreciated... Thanks, Ben |

Ben, Do you get the battery light on your dash (especially when your headlights are on)? Mine seems to have a bad ground somewhere and does about the same thing. Check the actual voltage at the battery and alternator to make sure your alt. is putting out enough juice to charge the battery. If it was rebuilt someone might have not done a good job. Then start looking for suspicious things, as in stereo equipment or other items that might not be grounded properly and are slowly sucking the power. Get a volt meter and check things when the truck is off. Things that are "off" shouldn't be getting any juice. This is the step I still have to do on my '89. Until then, I try to run it to charge or suffer the jumper cables. pwc |

IF THE CHARGE LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY ON IT WILL NOT CHARGE. ALSO WITH THE PRICE OF THE ALT I WOULD INVEST IN A CHARGER. LETTING A ALTERNATOR CHARGE A BATTERY IS NOT A GOOD PRACTICE. ALSO PETE HOW DOES YOUR TRUCK RUN WITH THE LOADS ON AND THE CHARGE LIGHT ON? MY TRUCK HAD THAT PROBLEM AND WOULD MISS AND STUMBLE WITH LOADS ON. I REPLACED THE ALT WITH A GM UNIT AND TRUCK RUNS GREAT. |
