I have a 2000 Discovery with 66,000 miles on it. Yesterday it started to, "slip", from 2nd to 3rd for a tenth of a second. If I shift from gear to gear manually it does not do it. I have records showing the 30,000 trans service was done. I spoke with the dealership and over the phone the tech said it sounded like transmission "flare" and that I would need a new transmission. Does this sound right? Thanks in advance. Steve

Not many places here in Portland want to touch land Rovers. The part of this that doesn't make sense to me is that it only slips between 2nd and 3rd and doesn't do it at all if I shift it manually from gear to gear.......

You might try just a simply trans fluid change. Some people might think this is wierd but many times my trucks including my LR "slip" or "rev" and after changing the fluid it goes away. You said that the last trans service was at 30K and now your at 66K. Thats way too long, usually every 20-30K you should change it depending on your driving conditions.

Your DII transmission is electronically controlled. I suggest you have someone with the special Land Rover test system (Autologic or Testbook) go through the system tests.

The valve body is probably at fault but there could be some other problem. Valve bodies are costly. I would suggest a LR specialist because Aamco and similar shops don't have the special LR diagnostic tools, and you can't do transmission tests with a generic OBD II scanner.

As to what the dealer said, dealers as a rule replace transmissions rather than repair them. We have one guy in our shop who's gone to ZF overhaul school but that is fairly rare. The transmissions are fixable with properly trained people. You might search under authorized ZF service centers to find a shop in your area if you determine overhaul is needed and there is no LR specialist with proper qualifications nearby.

My transmission was doing this when I first bought it at 55000 miles it needed to be rebuilt at around 60000, When all my gears just went out on me on my vacation. If I was you I would have it looked at.

Thanks guys. I've scheduled an appointment with the dealership. I'll have them diagnose it "and" change the fluid. If that doesn't work I'll take John's advice and look for shop that knows how to rebuild. (Dealership wants $2877 just for the transmission) Gotta love it......
