When driving at 70+, my 97 disco will suddenly stop accelerating for a second or two and then it will kick back in. I will floor the gas and it does nothing. Not good when you are trying to pass someone!!!! It doesnt happen all the time, but lately it has been doing it more than usual.

Well, I finally got the part from the ...I mean dealer after they sent me home the first time with sensor for wrong year.....Imagine that!! Popped it in and seems to be doing MUCH better! Haven't had a problem yet and it seems to be running much smoother all around.
Thanks for the info! I'll keep my fingers, toes, arms and legs crossed.......

It may also be the vehicle speed sensor. That's the symptoms I had on my 97 and i changed the VSS and problem was solved. So if it's not corrected, try that next.

Where can I get good prices on TPS or VSS, I'm having the same problem everyone is describing. However I get no engine check light. Is this something that will go bad with no engine checklight comming on? Or is it so intermittent that you won't get an engine checklight?

I also had the same problem with my '97 Discovery. It was the VSS. Expect about $500 from a dealer, then again you will know it was done correctly.

What, Garret? You thought it was so funny the first time you posted this advice, you decided to post it again?

What time? You took the exact same post from a day earlier, verbatim except for the first couple of words, and posted it again.

Do you have that reply on the clip-board, just waiting to hit ctl+C to stick it in?

Sure your help and comments are wanted, but your statement is completely inane. But if you really feel the job was done "right" for $500 at the dealership, then you are not on the right bulletin board...get it?

I have NEVER, nor will I ever take my Rover to the dealer!! Rovers arent rocket science and the amount of time it takes them to do something just seems ridiculous! (thats if you can even get an appointment in a reasonable amount of time) It only cost me 90 bucks to fix my problem and took all of 5 minutes.....Why would anyone pay 500....You got ripped off!!

Maybe Garrett is a MOLE for the dealers.....

Nathan at Discount Rovers was a great help confirming the symptoms of a bad VSS and happily shipped me the part with no problems.

I would recommend you give him a call or email. The VSS replacement takes less than 30 mins.

Hey I am just doing my part to stimulate the economy- right? It’s only money, plus if I would have fixed it my self I couldn’t claim it under my extended warranty.

Okay so I was wrong I paid some where around $400. Labor rate was $98 an hour, then add an hour for diagnostics, half an hour for install, and $100 to read the codes (It was causing a misfire), and another $100 for the sensor. There are some perks to going to the dealer. I got a brand new Land Rover for the day. Every time I need small things, light bulbs, license plate screws, oil/fluid changed, my car washed, etc., they do it for free no questions asked.

It’s your choice what you do, all I can say is that I am super happy with my dealer. I think that the average age of my mechanics are around 35 and with 10 years of experience dealing with Land Rover. Plus time is money right? Just my two cents.

I've got a new VSS on the way, hope this solves the problem. I'm leary of the valve issue, hope this doesn't end up being the case. But its never been my experience to ever have a car buck like this at speeds. It's not awful its like the engine completely shuts off for a split second and comes back on. Valve problems I've had before on other cars have resulted in a mis and a little less power. Just changed the plugs with Bosch Plats....everyone of the old plugs looked perfect. So I've got my fingers crossed on the VSS. I'll let you all know.

And Garrett it sounds like you have way too much money, not that it's bad thing, wished I had it like that.

This is my fourth Rover I started out with an 87 Rangie that is the one I should have kept. Then a 94 Disco that got stollen out of a mall parking lot, then a 91, and now my 96 Disco, which has a 122K on the clock. I love these trucks wished I'd known about this site a long time ago!

Ok VSS in and we'll see what happens. Drove for a bit and it seemed to do ok. Still had just a slight hint of a stumble but will find out for sure in the morning when I go to work...as it has problems more when it is cold. Does it take a while after new VSS installed for the computer to get back in sync? Or is it instant?
