The RH idler pulley for the D2 has been revised with a new METAL pulley. This should stop the pulley from being noisy once the plastic wears out. The new part number is PQR500060 through LR. I would recommend having this replaced before going out of warranty.

Just an FYI

Here's the recall info for anyone who is still under warranty:

1999-2000 Land Rover Discovery II Automobiles Recalled

Detroit, MI (SafetyAlerts) - The National Highway Transportation Administration (NHTSA) has published the recall of certain 1999-2000 Land Rover Discovery II automobiles because, on certain sport utility vehicles equipped with Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE), the loading conditions on the vehicle's left side engine idler pulley can cause the pulley to fracture.

Failure of the pulley causes the serpentine belt to be thrown off, resulting in a loss of engine auxiliary functions (power steering, water pump, alternator, air conditioning and ACE).

7,120 vehicles manufactured between May 1998 - April 2000 are affected by this recall.

Dealers will install an improved idler pulley.

The manufacturer has reported that owner notification was to begin during late-May or early-June 2000. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Land Rover at 1-800-637-6837.

[NHTSA Recall No. 00V142/Land Rover Recall No. D216]

Notice of this product warning was sent via email to SafeMail subscribers July 13, 2000.

The recall was for the left hand pulley. Oliver was mentioning the right hand pulley. It's still a plastic POS.

Oliver, do you know if the bearing is replaceable in the new design, or is it still a throw away part when the bearing goes bad. I was just getting ready to replace my RH pulley and am looking at getting an aluminum one made that will accept a sealed bearing from NAPA rather than throwing the thing away each time.

You can install the good metal idler roller mentioned here in place of the plastic part on the other side of the engine on any DII. LR won't do it for free, though.

John, they are slighly different sizes but I guess it's not enough to cause problems. Do you know off the top of your head if the bearing is replaceable in the metal LH pulley?

Sorry, been away for awhile

1. Easy to repair, if you can change your own oil, you can change the pulley. i just posted this in another pulley post

2. The new pulley is like the recalled pulley but smaller for the RH side

3. Havn't looked at it that close but i would say it is cheaper to go with the LR steel pulley. I think this will solve the howl noise issue. The noise is actually from the plastic and not the bearing. If you look at the plastic it is cupped when the pulley starts to make noise. This and I havn't seen may LH metal idler pulley noise problems.

Man oh Man, Talk about perfect timing. The Pig goes into service for the 37,500 mile job on Tuesday. The accessory section of my engine is producing a lot of noise which meets the description of Pulleys wearing out.

I'll report back after the Service Vist.

Paul,

If you're going to LR Cape Fear, they've got a couple of the pulleys coming in this Friday and they're scheduled to replace mine next Thursday.

Let us know how it goes.

Steve
