Well, the waterproofing project goes on but I have a question for anyone who thinks they know stuff.......

What the hell are these two things I've circled, they are creeping me out because I don't know what they are and am therfore unable to decide whether what, if any, waterproofing measures should be taken with them.

Any insight is appreciated. The pic isn't my truck so don't ask about the funky color. :-)

Well, I don't have a DI but my guess is fuses and relays. Thats where mine are under the hood on my DII.

the small box is your capacitor pulley lubricant reservoir, and the large box is the cover to your johnson arm adjustment. always let the dealer attend to these items. :-)

It's not fuses and relays, the fuses are in the fuse box between #2 and the battery and most of the relays are in the passenger footwell. I guess #1 MIGHT be some funky relay but I doubt it.

Nice smoke blowing job there Kevin, I know a few dealerships who would just LOVE to hire you on.

Any other guesses?? -Actually why don't we hold off on the guesses and wait for someone who actually knows for sure (no offense Eric).

Damn,

Kevin beat me to it. I was thinking the big box was the flux capacitor and the little box was the watchamacalit reservoir :-)

Not having much experience with DIIs, but seeing as though that hasn't stopped others...

#1 looks like the top of an evapoartive emissions cansiter. Is there anything beneath it? What about connections?

#2, I believe may be associated with either ATC or HDC.

A top view picture would help lots!

Carter, non taken, I can see that now. On a DII the batt is back a bit farther and the fuses and relays box is much larger and is right where you have circled.

Well, its a 98 DI so I doubt it has much to do with the ATC or HDC :-)

here is a side pic if it helps jog anyones memory, I can try and get some pics of my actual truck and closer up later today but as big as these parts are I think anyone is either going to know what they are or not know what they are.

1 is your evap canister. 2 is a relay module.

Thanks Charles!!! (and score 1 to Eric for the relay guess). Now, you wouldn't happen to know what the relays control and how much that evaporation canister would like being soaked would you??

Carter I cant imagine this can be under water to long if at all. What have you done so far to waterproof the vehicle so far?

well so far I've added the snorkel, greased most of the electrical connections, extended the axel breathers, and been shopping for parts. Long term plans are to seal up the holes in the firewall, get the ecu in a waterproof container, install I high idle switch, move to a in dash single cd player or relocate the cd changer (or put it in a waterproof container), extend the transmision and transfer case breathers, blah blah blah.... lots of grease, lots of sealing....... I'm working with some guys around here through email and IM, it should hopefully be pretty good when I'm done and I'm planning a tech write up on all the precautionary mesures I install (its going to be a long process though as I don't have a whole ton of free time)

Ummmm, and as Ho has so generously pointed out to me we are no longer calling this the 'waterproofing' project, it is now the 'preventive measures for water crossings' project. :-) You guys would listen to me and then try to drive through a lake of some dumb shit and then sue me, for what I don't know..... I've got a box of saltine crackers, you want those???? :-)
