I've got a line on a LT230 transfer case and as I'm getting tired of the clunk in my current Borg Warner, I'm considering it. Has anyone here done the swap and is it as easy as it apears? I've been told that it's a direct exchange and that the only things you have to change is the front drive-shaft and one mount.
Thanks in advance.

Jim,

You'll need two tcase mounts, a new front ds, and the ZF output shaft from a late model ZF (has longer splines)

There was also a very complete writeup on the Dweb a few months back by a guy in Germany (i think) who did it.

You could also talk with Trevor Griffiths at TMS who just recently finished a swap.

Jim,

Are you absolutely sure that the clunks are coming from your Tcase? Since teh BW is a chain drive, I didn't think it'd be a source of clunks. I'd suspect the clunks are a combo of diff lash + trans age + tired U joints. As a comparison, I tighted up my diffs, replaced the chain in T case, renewed the bearings in T case, new UJs and the clunks are still there!

Just hate for you to do all that work if not necessary! Of course you may have other reasons for changing over to a LT box.

I recently did the conversion on my 89. I put a 98 lt230 in. Feel free to e-mail me or post any questions you have. By the way there is only one transfer case mount which you need. The other is attached to the transmission.

It was a long weekend job. I do not do this for a living + my dad was there to help and offer encouragement. It was not difficult. The biggest problem I had was getting the parts I needed. I had a lift to use for the conversion. If I did another one it would be much easier. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate it a 5. The transfer case was very heavy and physically putting it in was the hardest. I got it in and working but my neutral warning is disconnected and I do not have a diff lock light yet.
