I fix one thing and another thing goes :-( Thank god for Discoweb. I get so much helpful info here. We here's one that may not be so simple. The fuse that controls the dash lights (speedometer, tach) and passenger tail lights, keeps blowing. I put a new one in and within 5 seconds it blows again. Where do I begin to trace a problem like this. Is there a voltage regulator somewhere along the circuit that could be bad? I have seen some post on the same issue, but no suggestions were offered for a fix. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
CZ

Sounds to me like some where the circuit is going to ground to soon. What were you working on before this problem started to occur? I would start by check all connections, like to tail lights and dash lights. Look at any place the wire runs and check for snag points. Get a ohm meter and check to see if you get a lots of resistance from the wiring going to and from the lights in question.

I will start there. Unfortunately this just happened about a day ago. I had not done anything to the Rover. I was driving down the road and hit a bump and darkness ensued. I am going to give it second glance.

I think those are on different circuits, but if you have a ground issue it could effect both. What year disco is it. I know the newer ones than 96(?) have this ecu thing tha controls the lights and such, maybe thats bad? Maybe a bad board solder joint?

I have the sample problem. What would a new ECU board run me? I have a 98 disco...

My disco is a 98. Any idea where the ECU is located?

Thanks,

Chris,

I can't really suggest specifically what the problem is on your truck, but most modern vehicles are wired so that if the tail lights go out the dash lights go with them (that way you don't drive around for weeks on end not knowing your taillights are out).

With that safety feature in mind, it seems very likely to me that the tail light wiring would be a good place to start looking. Sounds like a job for "Captain Multimeter."

Thanks,

Here is a bit of craziness for you. may help, and may not. Check the status of your glove box light. I had the same problem, kept popping the fuse, got in my glove box to get the old manual out and see if I could find a hint, well, no light, so I fidget with the bulb for a minute, it was pretty loose in there, finally get it back in right, it lights up, I replace the fuse one more time and I havent had a problem since.....

Hi Nathan

Thanks for that. I lost my dashboard illumination two days ago. Looks like I've been searching for the fault in the wrong area since then. Just went to have a look at the tail lights and sure enough... all is groovy again.

cheers

John

Don't know anything about the tail light safety thing. I have a 95 so a couldn't tell you where the ecu thing is. I remember seeing it in the service manual about the ecu for the lights on newer trucks. Sounds like to me check out those rear lights. Others seem to have fixed the problems starting there. DC circuits like grounding the way they were wired, change the ground and they like doing funky stuff to get to ground. My 95 if a bulb burns out it doesn't seem to effect anything else. Time to call out Capt. Multimeter and General soldering iron to combat the evil dark lord lucas and his wiring legion of doom! Don't forget prvt flux and corp. solder ...

I think I've been at work to long, I'm starting to lose it!

My '95 had the same problem.
It turned out to be a ground wire that had gone bad. Once identified it was an easy fix.

Follow Corey Shuman's advice. I had the same problem. The light in the glove box has a tendency to break off its plastic tabs if you have something in the glove box and close it hard. When it breaks off, it will short against the metal. The dash lights will go out, blow the fuse, and you will also lose the passenger side lights (I seem to remember). If the light does not fit securely, replace it -- about $10. This should solve your troubles.
