Rob,
just checked my filter guide and other than the 1983 Thunderbird turbo none of the ford filters are compatible w/ the Rover. Most of the Ford filters are too big.

I use a PH-8A or equivalent (with an anti-drain back valve) and it works great. Almost twice as big as the standard PH-16-sized filter that is called for in the books.

Any Ford smallblock or mopar smallblock filter will work just fine. Fords are longer and the mopars are fatter. All have trhe same gasket seat. There is plenty of room for a huge filter in the stock rover location. I've never run anything but Ford SB filters on my two Rovers.

Rob, most likely, yes.

it also helps to cool down oil somewhat.

In theory, a bigger filter would have more filter material plus you add a wee bit more oil to the total capacity. In any case, bigger probably is better.

I always run the longer K&N:

Makes sense to me.

IMO - more filtration, more oil, cheaper cost and better filter selection - no brainer :-)

Purolator 30001 is a good big one. Been using them for a while.

Great thread. As a mechanic, I would have to agree that bigger, more filter media, is better. I just picked up a 3 pack of PH8A's at BJ's for $7.99 for my first oil change.

Do does the PH8A have the anti-drain back? If so I think that I will also make the switch. I used to use PH8A's when I raced Alfa Romeos years ago and never had any problems.

This is a bit out of date now - but you may want to read it before picking a filter, especially Fram:
