I didn't get a chance to run up to 4x4labs since last september so my rear bumper has been on hold. However last weekend I made the trip and and we finally finished the bumper (except for sandblasting and powder-coating).

To fill in some information for those who are new or those who just forgot. My friend Luke Porter owns and runs a custom 4x4 fabrication shop called 4x4labs (www.4x4labs.com). Last year we started working on a new rear bumper for the Disco II built for hard core off-roading. The bumper is built from both 3/16" and 1/4" steel and incorporates a swing arm with a spare tire carrier and ladder (even though I don't have a roof rack yet). The exhaust on my Disco is also being modified (chopped off the resonator) and being re-routed out the side of the bumper. Small LED lights are being used for the brake lights and blinkers. There is also a 3/16" integrated skid plate for the entire gas tank. Once this first prototype is made, Luke will be able to build other Disco owners a similar bumper.

Here are some new pictures during the fabrication. These pictures do not show the spare tire carrier or ladder on the swing arm or the skid plate. The bumper is now finished and has been shipped off to get powder-coated. Now I just need to schedule time to make the 4 hour drive to get the final install.

Any plans for a D1?
I'll donate my truck as a prototype vehicle!

Looks good, however I'd be cautious about those quarter protectors. They're basically just a sheet of steel with a small bend and two braces. Don't know how well they'll take a hard hit. Might want to look into boxing them.

Greg French - I'm sure he could build a bumper for the D1. You would just have to get him a vehicle. He is located in Grass Valley, California.

Greg Davis - We thought about that but found that with both the braces and the heavy mounts that were made the bumper was very solid and showed no flex when used to jack up the truck. A massive hit may slightly tweak the 1/4" quarter protectors but I don't think it would cause damage to the truck. Who knows, maybe I'll get a chance to find out if I make it out to Moab or through the Rubicon this year.

I dig the braces on the quarter-protectors. Keep us posted on how they hold up.

Very awesome. I would love to have one for my D1. What's the ladder look like?

the holes on the drivers side of the bumper is for routing the exhaust, right? What are the holes on the other side for.

Blake,
I don't think those are for exhaust. I think the four "holes" are the mounting spots for the rear LED lights. But I could be completely wrong.

Yeah, the holes are on both the left and right, plus there appears to be a plate on the back blocking the holes from going completely through...

The 4 "holes" on the back of the bumper are for the LED blinkers and brake lights. In these pictures the hole for the exhaust has yet to be cut. The exhaust will exit the driver side quarter panel protection.
