I just installed a new alternator, now I am seeing a problem that I have never seen before. The speedo will jump around and the engine seems to run bad, it wont idle very well. This does not happen all the time, but so far only the two times on the way to school since I installed the alt. Speed tranducer comes to mind, but I am not sure. Any input is great!!! |

re-check the installation and made sure you don't have a bad alternator - what you are describing is ususally a symptom of a bad alternator |

BJ, I second what anon says. Also, I have heard of rebuilt alternators just not cutting it. I did replace mine with a rebuilt about 2 months ago and haven't had a problem yet, but after hearing stories of failing rebuilt alts on the Rover, and even of one catching fire, I'd go with a new one. If you did go with a new one, just double check everything, and also check the routing of your serpentine belt, that is an easy one to screw up and an easy fix as well.. Later.. |

Well the alternator is a brand new one, and when I removed the belt I tied it up so that the belt didn't come off any of the other pullies. Also the problem is not consistent. still seems like the speed transducer to me???? But if I knew I wouldn't be on this board, right!?!?!

The VSS does sound likely...your speedo signal comes right off the VSS and the VSS also regulates the stepper motor/IAC which would give you the idle problems. There's a great write-up in the tech section.
