Sad news, baby boomers!

Just heard that Mr. Rogers died this morning. He has been suffering from stomach cancer for the past few months. What a great loss to children's television and the world in general.

Sure glad Captain Kangeroo is still with us, even if not on TV.

It's a sad day in the neighborhood.. used to love that when I was a kid, still watch it from time to time now if I come across it. He seemed to be a genuinely nice guy.. and I thought Capt. Kangaroo died years ago?

Wonder if he is going to get burried in the sweater. Also, bet you they put Trollie in the box with him.

"Won't you be my neighbor!!"

Wow that's sad news. Does any one know if Mr. McFealy the mail man (the worst children's TV show characters name in history) is still with us?

You know, it would be much hipper to bash poor old Fred Rogers, and I'm glad you boys haven't done that. Trust me, I can be a cynical somebody, but it's never been easy to feel good about bashing Mr. Rogers. Sometimes good really is good.

Fred Rogers was a great guy and made a positive impact upon many lives. I only wish I could leave this world touching so many lives in the way he did. He will be dearly missed in my home.

Fred lived not 2 miles from me here in the Fox Chapel area of pittsburgh. My wife (and sometimes me if I wasn't to lazy) would walk our dog through his property as he lived right next door to an awesome park. He was a great guy on and off TV.....Mr. McFeilly, on the other hand, is not the great guy he appears to be on TV. He lives in this area as well but he has been plagued with the grumpy old man stigma. Oh well, Ole' Fred will be missed!

I always wanted a trolley, but could never find one.....

My kids are heart-broken about his passing, too...

I remember back in the day when I was a kid he had a behind the scenes special at a KISS concert! That was awesome! He wasn't there, but it was a part of the show.

Another time, he had Lou Ferrigno on and he was talking about how he became the Hulk, and went behind the scenes for that as well.

Those were my 2 most memorable Mr. Rogers experiences.

He was on the Howard Stern show a few years ago...kind of.
Stuttering John was interviewing him, asking his usual line of questions.

Mr. Rogers just kept his composure and talkid in his usual, calming vioce to John. It was great. Made John look like a kid.

Anyone listening on NPR to the Diane Rhem Show? They are doing a rebroadcast of one of the last interviews with Fred Rogers. If you miss it I'm sure they'll do play it again later.

Too bad to see Mr. Rogers pass on but he was a great childhood icon. I always will remember him and his little "shoe toss" at the beginning of his program. :-)

On a similar note, here in Canada, we have Mr. DressUp (Ernie Coombs). Not sure if some of the northern states got his program or not but he passed on several years back and it was an amazing pouring of emotion from the entire country when the news of his passing came out. Later in his career, he decided to do a national tour of his show that I went to and it was a childhood memory that I remember fondly.

Between Mr. Rogers, Mr. DressUp and Seseame Street, I was a happy kid! :-)

It amazes me to see the respect shown to Mr. Rogers on this thread. It just goes to show that there are some good people around and by the sound of it maybe Fred had a little to do with it.BTY my wife & I were talking about this and we could not remember anything bad ever being said about this man(that was real). What a legacy to leave. If I can leave this life with no one to speak Ill of me that would be a major accomplishment.

If you want to hear a streaming audio of the Diane Rehm interview, here's a link. Scroll down to the bottom and click on "Listen". It's a really sweet exchange:

Man, Picture-Picture was my favorite. Its probably one of the reasons I went into manufacturing. I loved to see how things were made. Which translated to my love of the Discovery Channel, Learning Channel, History Channel, A & E, and the Food network. He was definitly inspirational in my life.

Ah yes Alan. As a fellow Canadian, I, too, have fond memories of Mr. Dressup. Caleb and that owl thing too. I didn't watch it after leaving for overseas at the age of 8 so I don't remember much about the show though.

I've only seen maybe 3 episodes of Mr. Rogers and didn't really know anything about him until he died. Pity.

Mr. Dressup! I used to LOVE that show! It was on CJOH in Northern New York. I think it was followed by the Magic Garden. Anybody ever heard of that one? It had the 2 hippies on swings playing guitars and singing songs. I think their names were carol and paula. They would always start by saying "Hi" to everybody watching...by name! I used to get so upset when they didn't say "Greg"

There was a pink squirrel, and a bunch a flowers with jokes on their leaves called the "Chuckle Patch"

Yeah, Casey, not Caleb. "Tickle Trunk". Wow, that rings a bell but I certainly don't remember what it was...

Yeah I think "Magic Garden" might have been on after Mr. Dressup for me too. But since Gilligan's Islans was on before and I was only allowed to watch 1 hour ot TV a day, I hardly ever watched it. Same with "Romper Room".

Don't some of these TV show names sound a little strange to us now that we're all growed up?!?
