I'm in the market for new tires and was wondering if I can go any larger that the 235 70R/16 with stock suspension? If not, any suggestions for an inexpensive way to lift my 96 D1 a few inches?

Oh yeah - what kind of tires do you all suggest? I do light off-roading, like smooth dirt roads. The most I usually encounter is a 4x4 trap or tree in the road.

Do a search in the archives and you'll find lots of discussion about tire and suspension mods. Not sure if there's such a thing as an inexpensive way to get lift.

If all you're going to do is smooth dirt roads and such, your stock tires will be fine and won't likely need a lift. If you have an air dam, cutting that off will be a big help as will removing running boards.

I was thinking about taking off the air dam but will that expose my engine area and steering dampener too much for sticks / small trees etc? I do a lot of driving down old logging roads with small Alder trees in the middle. Should I get a skid plate if I take off the dam?

Corey, do the CB lift if you really want to be a CB about it. Order two OME HD or MD rear springs from ExpeditionExchange or Discount Rovers and move your rear springs to the front, new springs in the back. Only way to be a CB that I know of:-) I know of a couple of trucks not lifted with 245/75's and they rub or have cut a heck of alot. Lift it first..

cb = use hockey pucks under your springs.

*note*
i do not condone this, just saying, that is about as cheap as you can get.

Check the tech section of dweb, under tires is a guide for sizes with and without lifts. Also check out expedition exchange, they have a guide to spring sizes and lift sizes for ome springs. Its a good guide for any lift sizes. My truck came with 245/70/16's when I bought my d1 used without a lift. They didn't rub unless I really flexed the suspension. They look bigger and fill the wheel well better than stock. After I lifted my truck (not hockey pucks) they never rubbed again. I now have a need to go bigger in my tires for more clearence, I'm just a cheap bastard and can't justify getting rid of good tires until they are worn out, but the 245 width seems to do okay, not perfect but okay, here in Utah. Problem with disco's is you'll never get "monster" sized tires on them without tons of modification. Remember the bigger you go the more you effect your mileage and your power unless you regear, plus you'll need to trim your fenders. You don't have to regear unless you go much larger than stock, some thing like 245/70's or 245/75's you probably won't notice a change. Cutting the air dam, if the stuff your hitting on your trail you run damage the air dam, then you probably could damage the stuff behind the air dam. The biggest advantage you get from no air dam is an increase in approach angle. If you have the potential of damage to your steering gear and diff in the front, get a diff guard, relocate your steering damper and then geta skid plate. The guard and reloted dampener are in more need for protection first. imho

CB maybe, but I don't want to compromise the ride too much. I actually have tried the hocky puck deal on my Jeep Cherokee (poly "spacers" actually) but not good for off road. I need the hieght but don't want to lose any more ride (stiffness). It's already stiff enough...

Just missed your post Andy - thanks for the info. I don't want to go real big, just need some more beef like the 245/75's. BTW - is there a tech section on how to relocate the dampener that you know of?

Speaking of "monster" check out this beast. This is owned by someone on this board but I lost his name.

honestly, what you describe, call up expeditionexchange.com, order 1-2" ome springs (ask them about spring rates), set of ome shocks, and then get a set of 245/75 dunlop radial rover rt's from tirerack.com. good to go.

shocks and springs = $560
tires = $540

http://www.discoweb.org/steer.htm

or http://www.discoweb.org/steering/index.htm

Check out those links, also someone is selling relocation kits on the for sale board here. I was lucky someone I knew bought a disco that he ended up selling. It had a rockware one on it, before he sold it he gave me it for my stock one. Got to love good friends.

That picture is wild, wow, I wonder how much work that was to build up.

I don't know but I have never seen a Disco lifted like that - the wheel wells are even stock - no cut outs. Doesn't even have rock sliders on it, but then it probably doesn't even need them!

You can buy used HD rears for ~$50

Then CB lift and you are in it for about $65 shipped. Some nice dunlop RTs in 215 235 or 245 and you are good to go.

I have the dunlop 245/75/16 dunlop radial rover r/t's on my otherwise stock disco. The only thing I did was the trim on quarter panels. No lift yet, coming soon, but I havent rubbed even during heavy wheeling. Love the tires, highly recommended. FWIW

Just realized I forgot to mention I never cut or moved my quarter panels with 245/70/16's. Thats why I rubbed. Look in the tech section again for cutting the panel, or look at Kyles method of no cutting and relocating the fender.
