"Police are supposed to be watching over the people. Now they're watching the people."
- Skinny Puppy

Who knows, maybe the guy WAS causing a hazard. After all, he is a Jeep driver so he probably doesn't have much experience in pulling out OTHER stuck people.

Sorry, I couldn't resist... :-)

It's hard to get the complete picture from the little blurb, but if I were pulling somebody out of the ditch and a cop came along with a PA system and told me to cut it out, I'd at least go talk to the guy to ask how I could still help but not piss off the guy with the gun.

For starters the police use towing companies. They know them pretty good and its a good relationship . Its all about the money really. It also promotes that (You need us to help you out of any jams) mentality... Makes me sick. The cop should have done what he could do to help , thats his job...

While I don't totally agree with the ticket (hell I was doing the same thing the other night), another issue is the fact that towing companies have insurance that will cover anything they do to fuck up your vehicle while your average jeepers auto insurance might not cover yanking a taurus' bumper of with a strap.

There is a whole lot of stuff left out of that story: was visibility reduced, was the guy in traffic, blah blah blah. Since he received a citation from an officer who did not get out of the vehicle, he does get a day in court. Maybe the officer will be a no show and he will win by default!

In ole SC, our highway patrol have a roster of towing companies for each district. They use them based upon how often they show up as well as by their pofessionalism.
