Does it really work to turn the engine off at a stop light to save gas? Or do you make up for the savings by having to restart the engine every time? Also, could it be bad on the engine?

I wouldn't do it. As starting the truck will burn more gas then letting it idle for a minute or two. Plus it adds all those extra starts to your starter. I don't see it as bad on the engine from just starting it up and stopping it as it is made to do that. You would probably not notice the difference in gas milage at all.

Don't you love it? It's this argument that I hear come up every once in a while. So I thought, "Is there any validity to it?" Let alone the gas milage issue, it really can't be that good for your car. (In fact I think I remember seeing it on some sort of PSA last time we had high gas prices.)

I drive from 122nd, to Boring about 4 days a week. And there is no easy way to come back except by Marine drive!

There's also one called Drain. Go figure with all the rain we get we need a good "Drain".

According to a conversation I heared recently on "Car Talk" on NPR (airs Sunday afternoons here in NE), for your average fuel-injected vehicle, starting the engine uses about as much gas as 4 - 5 minutes of idling. All things being equal if you are going to idle less than 6 minutes, you are not really saving anything. Of course, all things are rarely equal. Starting and stopping your engine is putting extra strain on various components. And even in "rush hour" traffic I bet you have to roll forward at least a short distance within that 5 minutes (even though it seems a lot longer).

Those guys are great the way they handle some of the fuit cakes that call in. They appear pretty anti-SUV when you first start listening to them, but their really just anti-SUV-for-status. I've caught some calls from people who use their Toys, J@@ps, etc off road and they didn't give them any grief (just normal jabs).

I tend to slip it into "N" on those long stop lights or traffic jams, I feel that it idles better when not under load and you use less gass when not under load (my understanding) and over the LONG run I just might keep things a bit cooler when stuck in traffic Just Keep your foot on the break incase someone hit's you from behind.

I may be full of shit, But I am sure someone will let me know.

Ironically, this topic was just brought up on the "Ask Marilyn" column in Parade. I'm sorry, but that just has to be bad for your car.
