I am aware that many of you folks use synth oils, but to make a long story short, i like dino oil, Now, in my diesel i use rotella, I've been told countless times to use nothing else in a diesel, something about how the oil will hold it's viscosity better, now the question, I've always used nothing but valvoline racing oil in my engines and have never had issues, How does the rotella hold up compared to the valvoline in a gas engine???? i no longer have my "test" engine do to selling the hopped up car with oil pressure gauge oil temp cylinder head temp now i have no test to compare oils! Is rotella the way to go in my D1????????? already use it in wife's j**p and the peugeot diesel, which i run 200 mi a day @ 4k rpm, would like to stock only one oil in my garage! Thank you for any imput!! Peter.

Rottella Is a full fleet(both diesel and gas) certified oil designed for heavy duty applications. using it in a D1 would be a very good choice. It has a very strong detergeant package in it. my father in law once gave me about 10 cases(yes the old 24 qt of cans cases) of rottella that he had left over from a few diesel cars he owned. I ran it in every car I owned for a number of years. and I still run it in my scout from time to time. it also is the number one oil used by long haul truckers by a big margin...good shit! |

I've been using it in the Series for the past three - almost four - years now. Seems to be just fine, but it does indeed get quite black. I don't know if its the 30+ year old Series engine doing that, or if the extra detergents in the Rotella really are working that well. The 15-40 weight is just about what is suggested for most temps and it comes in handy one-gallon jugs - at least when I get it at "Sam's" |

The other thing is that Rotella has a modest amount of zinc in it, an anti-scuff agent. This can be especially helpful for aging engines and helping prolong the cam and lifters. The only oil where I've seen a higher % of zinc is in Valvoline Race (dino, not synthetic)...same deal as race engine often use much stiffer valve springs and may wear cams and lifters much quicker. |

I've run Rotella in all my Diesels (that's 14 years worth) I can find no fault with it and even considered switching the 4.0 to it for those very same reasons that Musky mentioned... |

Back in the dark ages when I was an A&P apprentice, the only oil I ever saw used in aviation applications was Rotella-aero shell. However, I was admonished about the importance of shaking the cans before use. You should see the semi-soluble additives that remain in the can if you don't. I was told it was a molybdenum compound that was semi-soluble and would settle out over time. Paul |

would that settle in my engine?, i have noticed no such sedament in the gallon jugs i've used, also i just bought 6 gallons for 34.95, which is a heck of alot less than 24 quarts of valvoline racing, which i'm no longer buying. Peter |

Now to add more to the argument...Rotella has introduced a synthetic oil to its line for the diesels. I made the switch in my smoker and have to say I am happy with it. I am a big fan of synthetic oils though and am a little biased. |

The problem with typical sythetics (from Mobil, Valvoline, etc) is the lack of zinc. Again, zinc is used primarily as an anti-scuff additive to decrease wear on extreme metal-metal contacts (like the cam and lifters). Most automotive sythetics lack this as zinc *supposedly* promotes early catalytic converter failure (this is the arguement I've heard). FWIW, Valvoline Race (dino) has a greater % zinc than Rotella, which is not surprising why RPi recommends this for their hi-po pushrod V8's (think high valve spring pressures at the seat and over the nose...) as premature cam and lifter wear can be a problem. |
