I have noticed this mild noise coming from under the D1, 1997, and today i crawled under and played with the ball joints ect and found nothing, while in foreward or reverse, i cannot stimulate the noise, brake, gas, ect, but when under the truck, i rotated the rear drive shaft and nothing, rotated the front and NOISE, only once, i can only hear noise while driving 5 mph or so with window down, it sounds as if you stepped on a pencil and broke it, a mild thunk, mabey like a wad of ice on a wire in the wheel well tapping the fenderwell, this noise can be felt through the truck ever so mildly, what could it be? is it this $ or what? the truck has 90k miles, no transfer case whining, or jumping out of 4wd, i dont know if it does this with 4wd engaged, and advice?????
i will change fluid tomorrow, and i do change all drivetrain fluids about every 10k miles!
Peter.
ps I'm scared!

Update, changed fluid, no shavings on magnet, oil very clean, still makes noise in drive and neutral @ 5-15 mph, in both awd and 4wd,
What is it? a broken tooth?
this noise started after several hours in 4wd in 15+" of snow,
Peter

Is it maybe a busted U-joint on the front D/S? You sure it is from the t-case and not the front axle?

If you say all drivetrain fluids.. how bout the diffs.

I've heard of the spider gears wearing out and would be consistent with your diagnosis.

Drop the front d/s and put in lock and see if you can still hear it. That would be a way to verify front. Also you can check the U-joints as well.

All fluids means, f+r diffs, transfer case, and auto box, i do this about every 10k miles, or the day after deep water crossings! i have yet to find water/foam in anything, and i also, while under there grease all grease nipples, (f+r splines, all 3 u joints) i will try to pull f drive shaft and try again! and yes it does seem like the noise is internal! u joints are tight and no play in splines, and cannot, with hand, move yolks side/side, or up/down, I'm plum confused!

After looking at the pic in your profile i see that the truck does not fear water. Have you drained the swivel housings? The noise could be from the CV joints. Just a guess but i did not see the swivel fluid mentioned
