I was curious if anybody had driven the Great Divide or if they could recommend any resources.
Thanks,
Trevor

I don't guarentee all these URLs are good but this should get you some info.

I have run quite a few trails from that expedition in Colorado.

Running the "great divide" really is what you want it to be. There is no way to really run the Divide, rather you would try to stay as close to it as possible and remain at altitude during your trip. Maybe even see how many times you can cross it.

The Divide is clearly marked on most maps and is marked on the DeLorme Atlas

There are really an infinite number of routes to take. I believe that Bill Burke has run groups through much of the "Great Divide" in CO.

Many of the trails in Co can be found in the Guide to Colodaro Backroads and 4-wheel Drive Trails (vol 1 & 2) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0966497600/qid=1046788695/sr=1-1/r ef=sr_1_1/102-7600703-3198553?v=glance&s=books

However, it is my opinion that the "proper" way to run this trail is on foot, I will do parts of it this summer, check out the link below for the continental divide trail: http://www.cdtrail.org/map.html

If you want the whole can of worms start in Alaska and end at the tip of So America. That certainly would keep you busy!

Some of the most scenic parts (in CO) are down in the San Juans and LaGarita Wilderness (IMHO). But also, the divide passes through Rocky Mountain National Park (trail ridge road is the highest road of any national park). One thing you are guaranteed is that it all will be beautiful and potentially challenging.

And don't forget to post here if you want some company. Many of us are familiar with the trails and could meet up for your run or portions of it.

the tentative plan is to venture west,(i am in maryland) in mid-to-late summer '04. on one hand, i would like to make this trip a really great vacation, but also the pbs program Motorweek is very close to our shop and it could be interesting if they use their connections to get LRNA involved to sponsor the trip. Seems like another opportunity to ruin a perfectly good vacation!

Two trips planned for this year if you're into group activities:

I had a good time with these guys last year - the ROXS trip will be more Gotta go! while the B2B folks are taking a more laid-back trip for photography and sightseeing. Nice, nice good people and they really know how to put together a coherent trip to boot.

Cheers,

e

Brian,

The wheeling or the hiking? Likely I will be doing more hiking this summer than wheeling. Keeps me *and* the vehicle in good shape.

;-)

I am currently in the process of planning about 95-115 miles of the colorado trail (hw 285@kenosha pass to halfmoon creek sw of leadville). Plenty of a drop in/out points since these segments go through Breck and Copper. The first legs cross the CD. Have not yet determined what parts of the CD trail to do yet.

If you wanna come, lets start planning. Currently I am planning on doing it solo, which makes life interesting and my wife a bit worried.

I will either do it in one shot or 2 night/3 day legs. Would like to make it through to halfmoon creek, this will put me > 1/3 the way through the trail, did the first 5 last summer but those were easy by comparison.
