Today I took off one side of my front drag link to put on a piece of pipe for renforcement. After pulling off the link and removing the tie rod I slid the piece of pipe over the drag link and tack welded it into place. I then put everything back together. But when I was tighting down the castle nut on the tie rod the stud broke in half. F***, S***, GD, &%$@#&%$. What do I do now? I called Advance, Auto zone, and pep Boys. No listing for Land Rover. %&$#@$#%!!! I took a quick look around and found some front end parts to a 86 Toyota. There was a tie rod there with the left hand threads. Did it work? Sorta. THe threads were almose the same. It started out good but got tighter and tighter. I managed to get about 1 1/2" into the drag link. I then reset the tie rod into the pitman. I had to put the castle nut on upside down but it did get me home. Guess what extra parts I ordered from Rovers North today? |

Believe it or not LR has chosen to continue to use Whitworth threads on the tie rod and drag link on these trucks!!! The ends are the same a on a '62 series truck!!! if that helps... My solution... A new tie rod with 3/4-16 threads... Bigger, stronger, Tie rod ends and parts are on the shelf at all respectable auto parts stores... |

I think the thread is 11/16 - 16 tpi - you can get tie rod ends from Dap, Rover connection, etc etc etc for not much $$ with grease fittings. Check whether you need the LH or RH thread. Bill |

Paul, I assume those are the part numbers for a ford truck? Are those Ford numbers or something like NAPA numbers? TIA. -Eric |

No EricV, those are LR part numbers. Just plug them in over at Atlantic British or Mansfield Motors, or British Pacific. -P |

When swapping tie rod ends, make sure the taper is the same. I think the LR is 16 degrees, whereas Ford is 8 degrees. I tried some Ford ends and they would never tighten down securely because of the different taper amount. The threads were the same, but not the actual taper. |
