Ok, obviously I have limited skill/experience when it comes to doing my own work...but I have a legitimate question. (I did a search...didn't find anything).

My car is running as loud as a Powerstroke Diesel, and I know that the manifold pipe running from the engine block on the left hand side (facing truck) is leaking at the connection. I am assuming this is a gasket that needs to be replaced? When the truck is running, I can feel (and of course HEAR) that air leaking out...and it only gets louder with acceleration. It's almost embarrassing...though it sounds pretty tough! :-)

My question is, can I buy the gasket/seal and replace it myself? Is it as simple as a few bolts? Or am I way over my head? I haven't had it looked at by a mechanic yet...

could also be a cracked manifold. fairly commmon as well.
i would not recommend doing this yourself. easy to bust off a head on a bolt and then you will have to tap it and get the bolt out. a realy PITA.
but first isolate what the issue is. might be a collector gasket too. that is the next gasket down from the exhaust manifold gasket. connects the Y pipe to the manifold.
but if you know a mechanic take it to him and at least have him let you poke around in there and help/watch him.

yeah, buy a genuine gasket, the cheap ones are half as thick. the bolts can be akward to get to and sometimes really really tight. so tight that you'll fear stripping the stud off and you dont want to do that. use Some PB blaster , naturally after the truck is cool and keep spraying it on every ten minutes, give it an hour's worth of time to penetrate.

if the gods are shining it will just unbolt and you can pry the manifold pipe down and slide off the old gasket and put the new one on. make sure any cooked on debris is scraped off before putting the gasket on. then rebolt it up. rebolt and tighten it with all your might.

Hmmm...thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm going to have someone look at it this weekend. I just don't want to mess up my truck by driving it like this too much longer.

Let's hope it something simple and cheap! I'm happy to buy new gaskets and hoses anyday...but it's the big stuff I need to avoid! :-)
