Im looking at a 1996 Rangeie for my wife. I was wondering what to look for to make sure the truck is a good one. The dealer told me that an electronic box was replaced not long ago because the trans. was not shifting right, but he did not know what the part was. Also what is the price range these should sell for with 80,000 miles? Im not real familer with the rangie, im a disco man.
Thanks in Advance.

I would be a little edgy if I was signing the dotted line on that vehicle. sounds like it could have some very exspensive repairs in the future

When buying a used high miles RR (or any LR), Its really important to look for vehicles with all records of service including large and minor jobs. This way you know if the previous owner took good are and kept it serviced. and also where it was serviced.

I'd run a VIN check to try and get familiar with the history of the vehicle. While the 96 is technically the second year of Series II RR, it is early for that model. Just because an electronic box was replaced doesn't imply your headed for expensive repairs. If you can talk to the previous owner, do so. Find the Land Rover dealer and have them print out a service history. Take it to someone other than the dealer and have it looked over. At 80K miles and a serviced truck, you could have many miles left.

That said, your title says Range Rover Pro/Con's. Did you mean relative to a Disco? Or just the 96 RR?

I use to have a 95 4.0se, the first year model, it was a great car, but very expensive on the wallet. At that age, little things start going wrong and if you have to bring it to the dealer to fix, watch out. Air suspension parts will start to go and act strange, AC system will act up, usually blend motors, very expensive to fix, heater core o-rings start to go bad, leaking coolant in the passenger footwell, again very expensive to fix, leaks start everywhere, etc. etc. Don't mean to scare you, but be aware that it will be expensive to maintain no matter how well the car was previously taken care of. My advise if you really want one is to find one with complete service history and buy the latest model year you can possibly afford. I finally dumped mine and bought and old 92RR, something that I can actually work on myself without having to be hooked up to the dealers testbook. I will be looking into a 99 and up 4.0 or 4.6 next year for my wife, these have the Bosch engine management system, much better, and they worked out most of the bugs by then, after almost 5 years. Might want to hold out for a 99 and up with the Bosch, prices are coming down everyday.
