I saw the coolest cosmetic/functional upgrade on a Disco I at a football game this past season. Someone had an upward-lifting rear door on their Disco I! I wasn't hallucinating, I took a double-take just to make sure it was in fact a Disco. Has anyone on here done this, or know of anyone else who has? One of my annoyances with my Disco is the way its rear door opens...it makes tailgating at games less fun since it doesn't give any shade and it blocks half the panoramic view of fine asses the Jeep guys get to watch with no problems. This is definitely my next mod, I just need to know how to go about doing this. (what hinges, hydraulics, etc.) I'm sure I could figure it out myself, but I thought I'd get some input from those experienced. Thanks!

i'd have to have some massive hydraulics and hinges to hold up a 255/85
but that would be smooth

Take the tire out of the equation and it wouldn't be that bad. Lose the side hinges, fab some top hinges, reinforce the doorframe, re-work the latch a bit & the door seal, and bolt on some stock struts that can take the weight. Hell, there should be some struts that can push up a fat tire & rim out there too.

Go to a junkyard and pull the pumps off ann old Suv like an exploder. If I remember right those only have one pump for the rear door. So I bet if you get two pumps you'll be able to support the door and tire no problem. Or you can get one of those huge pumps they always use in monster garage.

I've said it before, I really miss the fold down door that I had on my 88RRC. My new disco feels like a fridge!

I always wondered, was the RR tailagte (like a 95RRC) made to take the weight of say a 175-200 lb person standing on it to get at a roof rack on a regular basis?

Dave,

You should be fine, I have stood on mine, '89 RRC, many times with no problem at all (KOW).

The NAPA store catalog lists all sorts of pneumatic lift struts, many more than they keep in stock. You can select rod diameter, red end type, overall length, stroke and weight rating. Some of the bigger struts go up over 200 pounds. It also lists universal strut brackets and hardware.

Be sure to calculate as closely as possible what the force will be on the hatch _at the strut mount point_. This is VERY important, and the geometry can be very confusing. It may be an expensive project if the store won't let you exchange special-ordered struts. I just went through this with my utility trailer - I installed two struts to support the weight of the lid and 4 mountain bikes.

Be sure to use two struts for safety. If one strut fails, the whole thing will come crashing down with possibly deadly results. And they can fail - been there, done that!

If it were me, I would live with the swinging door and buy a roof rack, install a floor, and put some lawn chairs up there. It would be a LOT cheaper, you would have a better view and you would get more use out a roof rack, and you would not be forever bashing your forehead on the hatch.
