I am going to mount my WARN 8000 winch on a winch under carriage mount. Any suggestions as to what to do if i want skid plates/axel guards on the front near it? or is there no way to protect it ?

Anthony,

If I visualize this properly you are going to use a stock lr winch carrage?

You probably won't need skid plates. The things you will wan't to protect are the diffs. I think the winch set up you are descibing will efectively keep you from banging your drag link or panhard rod. The rear track rod is another story though. That pesky steering dampner will reach out and grab rocks if you are not carefull. I finally took mine off completely but a relocation is a better solution.

Thanks for the advice. The only reason i wanted to add some protection was just cuz i was worried about what others have told me and how under carriage winch mounts are more susceptible to damage. Why is diff. protection so much more important than other undercarriage parts?

Brian, he's talking about the hidden mount like you get at www.dap-inc.com

We were talking on AIM earlier, I'm still trying to convince him to get a bumper........ :-)

Well you are likely to hit your diff on a rock that you are able to clear with your winch. your aproach angle because of the lower winch tray will be lower than your steering componants and a skid plate in the front will reduce your approach angle even more and it will only protect the drag link. I would recomend bypasing the skid all together and ivesting in a heavy duty drag link that won't reduce your aproach but will be able to take some good hits. (save you some $ too)

Diff protection is more important because of the cost to repair and the disabilitating effect of a broken diff. The steering componants can easily be replaced or straightened on the trail.

Thanks guys.
I did find out that the steering bars are much less expensive than differntials.
I got my rover back today after 2 weeks in the body shop. Got in a little fender bender, but had everything paid for by the woman who hit me. She was 100% at fault. :-)

Now if i do go out and a buy a winch, some sits are claiming that you have to get new shocks, because it weighs the car down so much. I was looking at a WARN8000. I do light to moderate off roading. Nothing the aussie's do, just a guy in the back woods of MA. Help.

Thanks Carter I just checked it out. Looks like you won't lose any clearance from a completely stock bumper yes?

If you don't change springs you are probably still ok with that type of set up. The real weight comes from bumper and winch combined. I would still probably do the springs though...and, hmmmm, since I am spending Anthony's money I would probably go with a bigger winch too. At least a 9k. And by the way, Anthony, since I am spending your money can I buy some stuff for my truck too?

well yes and no Brian, since the winch mounts where the stock airdamn would be you loose clearance if from what you would have running a trimmed bumper (like most people do offroad). Plus you need to consider how far back that thing is going to stick.

yes I was thinking that it wouldn't ruin your aproach angle against a stock uncut bumper. And it sounds like he wants to keep the stock look. Carter, if you respond to this you are at 2k posts.

Stock look isnt too important. And since you are spending my money, I will think twice about asking you. :-) haha jk.
Also, What is a drag link? someone suggested i put that on rather than a skid plate?

Drag link is the rear rod that your steering dampner hooks too. I carry spares because it gets bent all the time.

Thanks for the link Evan. It also mentions ARB bumper twisting, as well as decreased approach angles. Is this true?

Anthony:
Doesn't the price on the 8k look good v 9k winch, but having seem 8k winches balk at recovering a rover on a slight incline I cannot recommend an 8k winch.
Why not consider installing a front end receiver, and using a multimount set up?
That way you don't need to get into replacing springs etc.....which I reckon you will one day...

I used a multi mount for a long time. Works just fine but decresses your aproach ange. A lot of guys don't like them because it is kind of impracticle to take the thing on and off but I just left mine on. I bought mine because I didn't have the funds for both a bumper and the winch and I consider a winch one of the most important mods on your truck.

Brian, explain to me what exactly you did to mod your truck.
My funds are kinda short, me going away to college next year and all.
I want a powerful winch and a strong support for it. Suggestions?
