I just bought a used 2000 discovery II after owning a 97.

I asked the dealer if the constant whining noise in the power steering pump is normal. He said it is. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks,
Chris

The steering pump should not whine. More likely you are getting a whine from the tension roller. If so it should be changed. There are no normal whines.

Thanks for your reply.

The car is still under warranty and I had them look at the tensioner and they replaced one due to a bad bearing.

I will take it back to them again and have them loo into it one more time.

No whines on my '00 DII, so no, that's not normal.

There is a TSB on these trucks, requiring replacement of the belt, the idler, and in extreme cases, other pulleys. Tell them to look it up, it was issued a long time ago.

I have the same noise and the dealer also said that it was normal. I just figured that I would fix it myself.
