crutchfield sells an adapter for $30 that will make aftermarket head units work. I have one on order and it will be here tomorow. The problem I had was finding a head that was shallow enough to fit. I can't recomend crutchfield enough, they are sending me $40 of volkswagon adapters that will also be needed to hook it up for free.

Dude I didn't have any problem getting mine put in. Don't remember needing any expensive adapter, wires are just wires. Wire harness/adapter should be included with the deck if it's bought new.

the speakers are amped seperatly from the stock head unit so if you install an aftermarket head w/ amps in it you will be double amping it, maybe it doesn't matter but I don't feel like finding out. $30 isn't that much.

There is the right way and there's the wrong way. Get the 30 dollar connector and it will take only a few mninutes to install a stereo

Yeah, I wish I had the time and money to gut the whole system but right now I just want to slide a new head in and hear some mp3s as quickly and cheaply as possible. :-)

When I hooked mine up, I cut the harness and used male and female insulated electrical connectors. If I want to put the stock radio back in (if I decide to sell it), all I need to do is reconnect the stock harness.

$4 at PepBoys.

And if you want to do it right, bypass the stock amps. Very likely the amp built into your new headunit will surpass the measly units stock on the Rover.

I'm having trouble removing the assembly that houses the radio/cassette unit. Can anybody help me with tips on how to remove assembly so that I can install a replacement radio/CD unit? Thanks

there are two holes just to either side of the radio, stick a 5/64" allen wrench in then and unscrew the screws that are down in there and you can then slide the whole thing out.

Jess I've been thru this and have yet to get the subwoofers back. I have a post asking how to wire but no luck so far.

MP3 is the way to go. Get one with the little remote. New wire will have to be pulled to eliminate the factory amp. That's where you run into trouble as the subwoof has it's own amp mounted to the speakers. I've yet to find the input needed for the ex amp.

Shop told me to find a wire dia for the old head unit. Only other choice is aftermarket SW and amp but I can't find one as small as the 2 @ 6 " factory. I's thinking 8 " but that's a custom housing and I could end up with a $400 SW on $250 system.

The SW is a must by the way. The old speakers will not put out s--- for bass. Stay in touch if you find a good solution.

The guys at Circut City could never get my rear subs to work either.

I waited untill Circut City had a speical on Car Radios, buy the radio and get the install free. Boy did they hate me. Afterwords I ended up adding a 150X2 Amp and two 12" subs. The stock door and rear speakers sound good, so I never touched them.

If you want a decent sound system all the F#@king around with what`s in your truck is a waste of time and money. Rip the whole shit out and start from scratch, and it will only take a couple of weekends to do a real schmick job.
Here's what I did to my 91.

Eurovox - in the garbage along with all speakers, including the so called "subwoofer".
The stock speakers from LR are total crap so connecting them to a decent head unit is a wasted exercise.

JVC KD-SX985 MP3 head unit - $450 Aussie dollars.
2 x Boston RC420 4" front speakers. 2 x Boston RX67 6" rear speakers. 4 x Boston Tweeters. $715

4x100 RMS Mosfet AMP $280

No subwoofer as yet.
Sounds terrific!
