How hard is it to change an Idler Pulley on a D2? It looks pretty easy but I guess I would ask first.

1. remove fan shroud top
2. remove fan
3. remove belt
4. remove pulley

P.S. be sure to use the new style metal pulley to avoid future problems

I belive one of my pulleys is making bad noises, but I don't know if it's because of wear on the pulley or the bearing.

Do new pulleys come with bearings, or are they a seperate part?

It'll be the bearing if it's the kind of noise you'd really notice. For your sake I hope it's the idler.

I've never seen one for a DII but it is sure to come with a bearing in the assm.

What do you mean, "For your sake I hope it's the idler"? As opposed to what?

Actually the only symptoms I have noticed is a slight modulation in pitch of the general engine noise in sync with slight movement of both idler pulleys.

Well, I just replaced both idler pulleys along with the serpentine belt, and that odd 'modulation' went away completely. Maybe one or both of them did have bearings on the way out.

I have a 99 D2 and I am experiencing a similar hollow rubbing noise from the left front side of the engine. I've had the left side tensioner and pulley replaced but the noise remains.

Does anyone know the LR part numbers for the updated idlers? There is only two of them correct? Things look pretty tight in there are they a pain in the butt to replace?

There are only two idler pulleys, the left-hand and right-hand side. I'd give you the part numbers off the boxes I got, but I don't know which came from which! Your dealer parts dept should be able to tell you, no problem.

It is VERy tight in there, until you get the fan off. Then there's lots of room, and it's easy to get the task done.

However, getting that damn fan off is a major pain! You need the special tools, which are really just very long, thin wrenches. I got a 'fan clutch wrench kit' from a local auto parts store which worked for me. It's the 39mm wrench you need, plus something to hold the fan pully. I used one of the other wrenches from the kit, and held the pulley by putting the 3"+ wrench over the pulley bolts.

The left hand pulley should already be a metal pulley from a old recall. The RIGHT hand pulley is what is giving you the noise and has been updated in the last couple months. The part # is PQR500060.

P.S. yes the pulley comes as one piece = pulley, bearing, bolt
