For several months now my heater has been acting up. I turn the heat on and the air sometimes gets hot and sometimes gets warm and then it goes back to cold. It has a mind of its own. Anyone had this problem and had it fixed? Is it an easy fix. Please help.

Do you ever hear a sound like running water under your dash? Coolant level low? Has it ever overheated? Also does it do it on both the passenger and drivers side?

It sounds like it's time for a new thermostat to me.

yes I have heard water running on the passenger side
Does that mean low coolant level?

Sometimes yes. Check coolant level. If coolant level is fine, try to add coolant while the engine is running (while cold) and see if the pump pulls some more (may indicate air in the system...).

If you live in Fl and it does not freeze there, why do you need a heater? :-)

Mark, did you put water, or distilled water into the system?

You may want to check the concentration of coolant WRT water. I always keep a few bottles of coolant that I mix with water so that I know the correct mixture is going into the system.

Mark:
Please, please, please put some anti-freeze in your cooling system!!! It's time like these that I wish my name was Richard so I could tell you to not be like me and don't be a dick, so I have to tell you not to be a Paul.

I was similarly inclined. I had awful cooling problems and finally replaced my radiator and did not put anti-freeze in the system. I thought to my self, I know what I'm doing, I know about molal freezing point depression and salinity levels, there has to be enough salt and some glycol to keep the water from freezing, but just to be careful I'll check weather.com and if it looks like it's getting cold, I'll dump and fill... Well... It didn't look to be getting too cold so I decided to wait until the payday before Thanksgiving... Guess what, it got down to five degrees fahrenheit! I blew up my engine for the cost of a $5.00 jug of green stuff. Cost me around $600-$700.

Don't be a Paul, put some anti-freeze in there-PLEASE!!!

Paul

It only takes a few minutes to take out your thermostat to test.

My heater would never get warm. I removed and tested the thermostat in Mrs' kitchen sink. It was stuck open.

A new thermostat (very cheap) and 'bobs-your-uncle'. Moreover, it runs better at the correct operating temp and appears to use less fuel.

Test the thermo!

PS. It gets cold in the UK.
