My truck has been sitting in my driveway for several days and I've noticed a puddle of green coolant that appears to be dripping from the top of the transmission (bell housing). I checked my resevior and it is now empty. Any ideas? Thanks p.s. The truck has also been close to overheating twice prior to the several days in the driveway. |

It is probably leaking from your t-stat and running down around your transmision. |

It doesn't look like it is coming from the engine area. I have a hypothesis: I think that my thermostat has been sticking and causing overheating. When it overheats, pressure builds up and could blow a seal in a line somewhere if the lines are old(which they are). Are there any lines that run back to the transmission that have coolant in them? Thanks |

The hoses to the heater core are in that area. |

I had the same problem about a month ago. When I checked the hoses, I couldn't find a leak anywhere, but the coolant was still flowing out. Upon further inspection, I found that the bolts holding the rocker cover assembly were only finger tight. I pulled off the manifold, unscrewed all of the bolts, and rethreaded them with lock-tight. Hope that helps. |

I'm not sure how tightening the rocker covers would stop a coolant leak... Maybe oil... |

Check the back of the intake gasket. If you look down by the coil you should be able to see if it is leaking or not. If the intake gasket leaks it will leak coolant onto the trans and run down. |

Same symptom on our 95. I was baffled why antifreeze was leaking from the transmission. But it was a cracked thermostat housing. Leak runs through the intake manifold valley to the rear of the engine, then down onto the bell housing. Of course it could be something else on yours, but that's what it was on ours. John |

Thanks for all the great info. Did any of your trucks over heat or have an empty resevior? My truck is a 95 with 177,000 miles |

I had a 88RRC, I was loosing coolant but not overheating. I had a leak in the head gasket which caused exhaust gaskets to get into the coolant system and expel coolant. Common problem. I replaced the head and valley gaskets and had the valves done as well. Put much life back into my old engine. Becareful about letting your rig overheat. The block and heads are aluminum and serious damage can result. |

No...not oil. I'm not sure how tightening the rocker covers prevented the leak either, but it did. I have a friend, Judson, who was a mechanic at Land Rover Chattanooga for a few years until he broke off on his own. He was the one who found the loose bolts. The leak stopped, and I didn't ask any questions. |

Inspect your heater hoses between firewall and rear of engine. |
