Day 1. Took a remote that I had purchased on Ebay to each of my two local Rover dealers in Scottsdale, AZ to see if they would help me reprogram the thing (yes...I tried the instructions in the FAQ, but it wasn't working - which I'll explain later). Both said it was an "extensive procedure" that would require an appointment to bring it in for about an hour worth of labor. I said I didn't think it was that extensive a procedure but would call back for an appointment (I didn't let on I already had the instructions, and just wanted another pair of hands to help).

Day 2. Asked my wife to take it in to try her luck. Not only did they reprogram the thing for free, but they fixed the original problem that was preventing me to program it myself in the first place. Evidently there was a badly corroded wire (which they fixed) for the alarm that wasn't making contact with the battery, preventing me from reprogramming the stupid thing in the first place.

Day 3. Have to take wife out for a nice dinner to thank her. Sometimes pays to have a beautiful wife. Really questioning whether or not I trust the LR dealers here now...

Could I borrow your wife so I could get my 95's remote fixed too? :-) Actually I probably have the same problem with my truck, do you know what wire or where that wire was fixed at? Its been driving me nuts, as I try the program instructions and don't get no response.

Andy,

My understanding is that they unplugged the hood switch, cleaned it, and replaced the wire leading out from the hood switch (to where ever it goes!). This was after 8 tries by 4 different tech guys trying to run it through the regular programming routine. Just make sure that the switch completely "pops out" after your release it from being depressed...may require you to pull up on it a bit. Mine evidently was sticking.

Good luck!

hahaha...I think I'll keep her thanks! New rule around the house is that she takes all vehicles in to get servicing after I figure out what is wrong. Could save me thou$and$!

That's an awesome story...but I have to say it doesn't always work that way.
I've had a few places try to scam me before thinking I'm a woman and therefore know nothing about cars. They were certainly surprised when I told them exactly what was wrong and how it needed to be fixed! Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't.

Congrats to your wife for the victory!! :-)

Thanks...she was absolutely howling when five service guys came out to help her.

Very true about it not always working that way...brains AND beauty can take you far though. Kinda lends some credibility to the Pet Shop Boys song "Opportunities" ---

"I've got the brains, you've got the looks
Let's make lots of money
You've got the brawn, I've got the brains
Let's make lots of -

I've had enough of scheming and messing around with jerks
My car is parked outside, I'm afraid it doesn't work
I'm looking for a partner, someone who gets things fixed
Ask yourself this question: Do you want to be rich?"

Too funny!
It DOES have it's advantages though, I went to Best Buy the other day and couldn't get AWAY from all the 'helpful' service men! When I walked out there were 5 or 6 that said "Have a good day!"
It's hilarious sometimes!
