Yakima makes a very nice one, but also pretty expensive. It is very sturdy and will hold up to 4 bikes. You can lock the rack to the hitch mount and lock the bikes to the rack as well. |

You can what ever hitch rack you want to clear a wide rear mounted tire. Buy an receiver extension for your hitch. Go to any rv/trailer shop. I use a transport two bike rack by sportworks. I have the optional high rise stand that puts the bottom of the rack higher than my rear bumper. I had to use a 6" extension so I could open my door without removing the rack. Unfortuntly I still have to take off the bikes to make to open the door. If I bought a new rack today I think I would look at that yakima swing away one. My problem is two of my bikes are full suspension mtb's and don't fit on all racks, but that yakima rack is nice. Go for the swing away type, they work really well. |

One more thing, watch your departure angle with any rack mounted in the back. That's why I ended up getting a roof rack for my disco. I wanted to wheel and carry my bikes, the rear option will be the shit out of the bikes. |

You can buy an adapter for full suspension bikes to use them on a rack that needs a straight top tube. Its a bar that attaches to the stem and seat post, giving you a straight tube, over the bike's bent top tube and you clamp this adapter bar in the rack. They are under $20 at most places and work really well. I use a roof mount, but if I were to get a hitch mount, I'd get the Yakima swing away too. |

I wanted the Yakima swing-away, the Roc-n'-Gate, but, the CB in me couldn't stand spending double just to get the swing-away feature.... I went with the Yakima Terrafirma; it will tilt down instead of swinging away, and was half the money. It holds 4 bikes, which was a requirement for me. The way I look at it, I don't leave it on there all the time, I only put it on there when I'm carrying the bikes, so, it's not THAT big a deal to me whether or not it swings away... And, I can't say about a Defender, but, on a D1 with a 245/75R16 on the back door, there was no problem at all...... FWIW... -L
