Hi,

A while back it was mentioned that the middle muffler on my 97 Disco had a heat shield attached to it...that went between the middle muffler and the underside of the body. Apparently my heat shield probably fell off or came apart and is missing. Upon inspecting it (around the middle muffler), I only see a single L shaped bracket with what appears to be a single screw hole towards the front (top side) of the middle muffler as well as a box shaped bracket a ways back from the middle muffler. Both appeared to have screw holes. I'm not sure if the rear box shaped bracket has anything to do with holding on the heat shield. I'm going to order the heat shield but am trying to figure out how it attaches and what other mounting hardware (brackets, nuts and bolts) are needed and if I'm missing any. I hope I can install the heat shield without having to lower the exhaust? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Dave:
Order the shield, and see how many bolt holes it has and where they are. I thought it was four, but I've been too busy to crawl under and do mine yet. Anyway, hopefully at least one of the bolts is still on your truck so you can take it out and find a match for any that are missing. Thin fender washers (the large-diameter jobs)above and below the heat shield would probably help keep it from tearing out the bolt holes (which is how they seem to fail). Definitely no need to lower the exhaust to install the new shield. P.S. Get a small mirror to let you see on top of your muffler - I think I finally resorted to that and it made it much easier to figure out how the shield attached.

Hi John,

Thanks for the feedback. The one pic I've been able to find of the heat shield seemed to have four bolt holes as you mentioned. When I looked under the Disco I could only see the two brackets I described above with each having a single bolt hole that wouldn't line up with a four bolt hole pattern. MAybe I'll have to tap out new holes in the heat shield. The reason I am eager to get a shield back on is during last summer while hauling a lot of gear, especially on steep climbs, the floor above the center muffler (inside the Disco) got burning hot..so thats what first prompted me to check if I had a missing heatshield. I hope to replace it before I do any damge (which none has happened so far. If I find anything out after ordering I'll post the info. Thanks again!
