I just purchased my 1997 Disco1 and notice that when I first start the motor the oil pressure light stays on until the car warms up. It goes out after about 5 minutes but will go on and off intermittently after that. It seems to go out as a de-accelerate. The disco seems to run fine otherwise. ideas????

p.s. I live in canada and it has been very cold here in the mornings!

ooo boy...this is one of those things you don't want to ignore or speculate on. Find out what is wrong soon!

First, check the oil levels; I'd imagine they are fine, but you mentioned the light comes on and off intermittently, especially going off during deceleration...that's when the oil is sliding forward in the sump.

Next, check the connection and/or oil pressure sender. Could be something as simple as needing a new sender. May be worth your money to buy a new one.

Third, drain the oil and drop the sump. Is the oil-pickup loose? This could cause it to scavenge air instead of oil. Not very good WRT the longevity of your engine.

In general, when the engine is cold, you should have higher oil pressure at idle and through the RPM range than when the oil is hot. It is more viscous when cold. Typically, when you have pounded main bearings, etc. which would lead to low oil pressure, your pressure is fine when cold at idle and when driving, but you'd get the low oil pressure light when the engine is warm at idle (and usually not when driving).

I'm guessing your sender is toast, but you need to rule out the other possibilities before the problem becomes catastrophic. Good luck!

could it be sludge in the oil pan interferering with the sending unit or oil pump?

On a 1997, I'd hope not...

if there is sludge in the oil pan, the engine has been seriously neglected. Start shopping for a new short-block.

Why a new short block ? Remove the pan , check the pickup. I suspect its the rods and mains. replace them and forget about it....

On my 97 the oil light did the samething at first. Then it stayed on all the time. I checked the oil level constantly and it was fine. I did an oil pressure test and it checked out ok. I just unpluged the sender. It's fine now :-)

I just blew the engine in my 1997 Disco, I think it was because the oil pump went bad.

Fix it now, or get a good pair of shoes!!!

Kyle, I advised the new short block if there was sludge in the sump...
Given that this is not an old car, sludge = serious neglect; I suspect if it were the case, the rods and mains wouldn't be the least on the replacement list...cam, bearings, lifters, etc.

BTW, who has a good source of undersized main and rod bearings for the 4.0 block? :-)
