Hey folks,
It's downright freezing here in Chicago. So much so that last night when I went to the ATM, the window was frozen shut. The motor sounded like it disconnected from my window when I tried it. After warming up more, all the other windows opened fine, but my driver window dropped open half an inch and stopped. The motor still works when I press the button. I can hear it. But it's now operating independently from the window. It's like the window disconnected. So there it sits stuck half and inch open, unable to close or open.

What the heck do I do to remedy this one? I've never opened up door panels to mess around with this kind of thing. I probably have a mini snow drift on my seat this morning.

Thanks,
M

M,

You can fix it. The panel on the pulls off. First you have to unscrew all the hardware off the door. Then pull the edge of the door skin and it will pop right out. It is held on by these plastic tacks. The tricky part is that teh tacks are glued to the inside of the skin and if you are not careful they will just tear off the skin.
That's the first step.
Secondly from this point you can probably force the window back up from the inside. You can hold it up teporarily by sticking on one side across the top of the door and down the other side.
Third you either need a new regulator or you can repair the one you have. Check the tech section for that. If you got a bit of Magiver in you I think you could do it.
Otherwise order a new regulator and take the old one off and put the new one on exactly as you see.
Finally move south. Life is too short for Chicago winters.
Feel free to email with questions or if you want pictures.
Any questions?

Matt,

I believe I meant sticking "duct tape" across the top.

Thanks Rob. Sounds simple enough, although I've tangled with those cursed plastic tacks when replacing the cubby on the rear door. They snap off more often than come off.

I'll never leave Chicago. If I ever leave Chicago, I'd emmigrate Mediterranean.

Thanks!

Matt,

I ordered a bunch of those tacks and I keep extras at the house. motorcarsltd.com stocks them. I think they are 30 cents a piece or so.

If you find yourself doing these repairs often, snap-on makes a great tool that is just for removing those annoying clips.
Most likely what broke is the round, white plastic disc that rides in the track. It's the weakest link of the regulator. If that's what is broken, take the broken bits to the nearest WalMart, etc..., and look in the plumbing repair aisle for something the same size. I found a grommet of some sort that had rubber on the inside and brass on the outside. Because of the rubber interior, I was able to pop it over the rivnut. I did this fix 3 years ago, and that window works better than the other three. Of course, you could always just buy a new regulator, but that's not the CB way of life!
