What Red Line fluid should I use in my 96 Discovery? I only saw one post with redline in it and it was for a manual trans. Thanks

Use crap ATF, texaco/havoline is the recommended. ZFs do NOT like synthetic, ask Bill B.

thats odd my BMW has a ZF and it doesn't know I put good fluid in it, its just smoother. Not trying to be a wise a$$ but really unless the weight is differend how could it be bad? Bill B. chime in. Anyone else have bad expereinces with synthetic oils?

ron is right on this one...ZF's dont like synthetic ATF...many BMW,MB and rover owners have had strange shifting charachteristics after switching. most can be done away with a small adjustment of the modulator to speed the shifts back up.

Michael, you said it made yours shift smoother...smoother equals hotter sharper shifts equals cooler. most people think a fast hard shift would be hard on a automatic but its not its easier on them because it generates less heat.

and HEAT is the enemy of automagics

True true heat bad. Smoother in the bmw, forgot to mention its a 5 speed. So it feels smoother to shift it. Ok then what is the best conventional atf for my 96 D1?
Thanks

My experience was with Amsoil ATF - trans was fine until changing to amsoil and then gave up entirely after about <10,000 miles with synthetic. Still haven't torn the old one apart to see what/why it failed, so I cannot say it was the Amsoil for sure, but it was awfully suspicious. Trans was only at about 50K total at the time. Have used cheap ATF aver since and changed it about every 15K.

After mine failed - I was reading some of the MB and BMW boards and similar problems were reported there.

On the other hand I've been using Mobil 1 Synth ATF in '89 ZF 4HP22 for about 10 years and 100k miles with NO probs (now has 125K). I change fluids every 30K (although Bill B's 15K sounds good) and have had 2 filter changes. I must be living on luck!

When this came up before I emailed ZF, Mobil, and LR re: Mobil 1 ATF use. "Martin Vogel" from ZF said to use only the recommended ATF listed on their website (No Mobil 1 listed) due to the "calibration of the transmission". LR and Mobil both said if it met the dexron requirements given by LR I was good to go.
