Hello. I was wondering if anyone happen to know off hand what size socket I need for my wheel nuts? I just bought my '95 D1 and was noticing some noises from the drivers front and some wandering of the front end. I was going to pull the drivers wheel and check the tightness or lack thereof of the bearing, but the last person, or gorilla, that put the wheels on tightened them so much that I twisted the factory lug wrench without budgeing the nut. So while I'm at work today I want to try an impact gun but I'll need to go buy a socket. Any help, thanks. Brian

Wrong - 1 1/16 or 27mm

Unless caps are buggered up

I always thought 1 1/6 also. A proper socket and a stout breaker bar works nicely.

Sorry, my bad. It's way too early...

I checked again and it is 1 1/16.

Thanks guys. 1 1/8 got them off (it was what I had in my box). But after getting them off and properly torqued back on I checked the size of one and it would be closer to 1 1/16 or 27mm. Looks like I'm going shopping after work. You can never have too many tools. Thanks again.

Does anyone use good quality Snap on sockets, with the radiused inside corners? and are they any easier to get on and off the lugnuts? My crafstman aren't and since NTB remounted my tires a couple of weeks ago it's harder than ever to get a socket on the lugnut.
Thanks,
Wes

Unfortunately what screws up alot of the caps is tire shops using an 1 1/8" socket on an impact wrench. With the oversize socket, there is plenty of room for the s/s cap to "flow" inside the socket - especially when they have it cranked up to 300 ft lbs or so :-(

Once the cap is buggered up - there is not much hope for getting back to the proper size.

Actually I went through all the options listed above, and from what I understand they might work on some trucks, but the only thing that came close to working on mine - and that actually works really well - is a 28mm 6 sided socket. Like I said, I went out and bought every option listed above and finally got the 28mm and popped em right off with no trouble - I got exactly 2 lugs off before that!!

The 1 1/8 and 27mm did fit, but only about 1/3 of the way onto my lugs - they are tappered for some reason. They have those pretty little chrome caps on them. Anyway, the 28mm actually fits all the way on, but I would NOT use a 12 sided socket. I got mine off with a normal sized ratchet and they were on there with 95 lbs of tourque.

The bar that LR provides never got one lug off my truck.

I was wondering the same thing about mine, I have a 97 Disco I bought used. The bar that came with it didnt fit on any of the lugs on my wheels. Is this some kind of wide-spread problem with Land Rover. I know its probably one of the "perks" of owning a Land Rover, but that seems a bit much to issue a lug wrench that doesnt fit that car's lugs.

The lug wrench that comes with the vehicle does fit nicely. However, you can never generate the torque to lossen the lugs. You can try to use the jack bars overtop the lug wrench for added torque, but the wrench will actually bend -- yes the thick metal bends rather nicely. I recommend, as discussed above, gettinga nice breaker bar and socket. A breaker bar is basically a long/thick ratchet to which you attach a 1 1/16 socket (6 sided preferably). Good luck with your Disco :-)

I was using the jack-handle with the stock wrench one day to take the wheels off to rotate them while I was washing the Rover.... it was still feeling tight after several turns, then... then I realized that the lug-nut hadn't budged, but I had a nifty-looking spiral, having twisted the handle around the axis of the socket several times...

Retrieved the 4-way out of the Series, no prob. I did get a heavy-duty replacement, though, so that it is there if a flat needs to be changed w/o having to carry the 4-way in the back of the Rover... the heavy-duty single-one slips under the seat so much better.

The lug nuts on a Disco tend to rust in between the chrome cover and the actual lug nut. This causes them to swell to slightly larger than 27MM. I took a 27MM 6-point impact socket and hammered it on each lug nut and pulled it back off with Vise-grips. After doing this I now use a 28MM socket and things work fine.
