I was doing the traditional pre-trip checks today, and put new tyres on the Discovery one, and noticed that the rotoflex was pretty torn, there were threads hanging out of it! not all the way through, but nearly all the spaces between the bolts on the outer rim of the rubber was cracked halfway through, or torn. How long do you think it will last until it breaks? I'm planning on stopping on my way to Savannah Ga, at Cape Fear land rover, or charleston land rover to get it fixed...how hard is it to do on ones own? where can I get one by monday? Thanks!

Christian - I live in Charleston - welcome! - I also just changed out my rotoflex disk and added Bilsteiens. Very easy changout. Takes about 10-15 minutes. Part at local dealer is $113 plus labor. I ordered from Atlantic British for 70. Simple operation. I would recommend a floor jack if you have it. Can be done with LR jack. Good Luck

Thanks! Perhaps we'll run into eachother...we're going to continue on to Savannah, but we'll be camping at Hunting Island near Beaufort...just a little bit nervous about the ol' rotoflex coming flying apart on the way down..so I"m driving gently to hopefully keep it intact until wilmington or charleston. Maybe we'll see you!

Its REal easy aslong as you do not have to replace the metal bushing that is in the end of the drive shaft.

Hi Christian. I started to change out my roto recently for the same reason as you: I could see a lot of threads hanging around the bolt holes. I also had a grinding noise for a shor time which, unfortunately, I could not really hear because of the noise I was getting from a caliper that was bad. As soon as the caliper was replaced and the noise persisted, I figured out the roto was going.

I also went w/ the AB kit for $70. It was a really easy process to remove the old roto (look at the first steps of the "rotoflex to u-joint conversion" tech section) and I only had to deal with a few frozen bolts. Once that was out, however, I found two problems. First and most obvious, as the roto went the bolt heads were cutting into the flanges on both the shaft and diff casing. Weakened flanges are not something I wanted to worry about on the trail. Additionally, the rubber bushings in the shaft were shot. Although a new set came w/ the roto kit, I was not able to remove the old ones. I don't have access to a torch, but I have been told that would work.

Considering the need to replace the shaft anyway due to flange damage, I just ended up ordering the AB kit to convert over to u-joints ($349 on sale) vs. a new roto-style shaft ($379 best price).

Good luck, and be sure to use the "Search" feature, as a few of us just went thru this process ourselves and have gotten a lot of good advice here (as always)!!

-Lawrence
