My 97 D1 has been having intermittent problems with fluttering between gears while driving. The tachometer will jump up and down, at regular 2-3 second intervals, whether accelerating or at steady speed, while this problem occurs. It does not happen every trip, but has been much more frequent lately. When idling at a traffic light, it has no problems. Also, the check engine light is not on. Has anyone had experience with this issue?? I am concerned that it could be a problem with the computer, a sensor, or even the transmission; but I am not sure where to look first. The D1 has been running fine otherwise, up until this. Would like to avoid the costly dealer if possible. Thanks, DC |

I assume this happens when driving 55-70. I will bet VSS or speed sensor. Real easy fix one bolt. Contact Nathan at Discount Rovers. He is in the vendor listing under resources. There is also a write up in the tech section on how to replace this. 15 min tops. |

I just replaced mine. I guess could be 15 minutes for someone that has done this a few times...or maybe my hands were just too big...took me about 30 minutes. Plus the angle the allen driver when in was to the side a little making it a little slow to make sure I didn't strip the bolt. But definately not a hard task. |

I had a similar problem wtih my 97 d1. It was the TPS - throttle position sensor. It is located on the top of the engine (plenum chamber). It was an easy fix (2 screws, pop out old, put in new) and you can get the part from roverconnection.com for 70$. DAP also sells them. They are also sometimes referred to as a potentiometer I believe. My Disco runs better than ever! |
