Has Paul been diverting gov't funds away from the V22 into his disco again? Seems that hydraulic line failures are the culpret this time.

Man, I can't get a break. Fucking Media

Here's the quik and dirty: We buy Ti tube stock for the V-22. As mentioned in the Tech section, when buying Ti, you have to be damn careful who you get it from. Anyway, our Vendor provided us with some crap Ti and we are worried about a few hydraulic lines that were manufactured from the stock and made its way onto an aircraft. Just to be on the safe side, we are removing all of those lines and replacing them with lines manufactured from a different vendors stock. Needless to say, that particular vendor is no longer on the team. :-)

We'll be burning gas and punching holes in the sky again in a week.

Yes I can hear you now Kyle. :-)

If it wasn't for all the political BS, we would have had the blender flying a long time ago and it would be over in the Middle East, saving the world.

Well I think the political stuff is all based around that gravity thing and the crashing thing... :-)

Yeah, good point. But there are those who forget and do not know how aviation works in creating new aircraft. Every plane on the planet goes through a rough time. But now with the Media, its harder because the truth gets so distorted and out of control. Sometimes I wonder what Paul Grant does for a loving.

Hell, I would say that 90% of Americans do not know that aviation played a huge part in the developement of the Postal service back in the 20's. Many men died trying to haul the mail.

Like I have said before, they install gravity everywhere these days. And gravity can be a bitch..... :-)

Paul, I have read that the Harrier is one of the most difficult aircraft for a pilot to master... how does it compare with the V22?

Thanks!

My guess is that the V22 has a lower potential of problems that are caused by hot gas ingestion, giving it more predictable charactistics at slow flight/hover. Heat means expansion which means less air per unit volume to burn/deflect. It would seem the trick with these babies is managing the transition of the vertical lift component from the props to the wing.

Predictability is a key element to any flying machine, because the pilot has to stay ahead of it. If you always know what the craft will do in a given scenario, staying ahead becomes "easier", hopefully innate.

Eric,

You have to respect the skills of a Harrier Pilot, Those guys are amazing. I have heard them compare hovering to that of balancing something on the tip of a pin. Now imagine them doing that over a ship, while the ship is moving. From what I read in Aviation Week and Space Technology, the new JSF is supposed to be a lot easier to control and more efficient in the VTOL mode. Think about this; the Brits are the ones who got VTOL to work with the Harrier's earlier model, the Kestrel back in the late 60's. Kind of like LR, thinking outside of the box was needed for engineering progress. Compared to the Osprey, the Harrier is a more difficult to operate aircraft.

Its definitely true that it take a long time to work the bugs out of aircraft. When the black hawk helicopters came out, they had several crashes, but before long it was flying faster that the cobra attack helicopters. funny thing is the only way I know this is because I have a close friend in the special forces. I don't remember it ever being in the media.

You are absoulutely right Paul,

The first Blackhawks had a tendancy to cart-wheel through the air. The Amp for the Stabilator was not EMP protected, thus causing the stab to de-program while at speed. Blackhawks are damn good helos.
