I have 62K on my D2 and I am experiencing a slight driveline clunk when shifting into reverse. The noise is only noticable after the vehicle has been driven a while and the driveline is hot. This isn't the same transfer case spline wear problem some D1 owners had to deal with is it? I thought the problem was resolved by the time the D2 came into production? |

Driveshaft seems fine... U-joints are tight! Should there be any noise at all when shifting into reverse? Was there not a recall for D1's around 96 or 97 for transfer boxes with input shaft spline wear problems? I recently bought the D2 to get away from a D1 with the above problem. Are we talking about a possible inherent design flaw here? |

I've got the loud clunk noise when shifting to Reverse as well. It worries me sometimes. Someone on this board suggested shifting into Neutral first and then continue to put the shifter into Reverse. I tried that and the clunk still exists. I'm not sure that it's a problem and if I should be worried about it. 99 Disco I |

Some driveline clunk in these vehicles is normal. If you go to the dealer and drive a new disco it will cluck going into reverse. It's just the nature of the beast due the gear driven transfer case. |

Is a slight clunk on overrun also normal? I've noticed the occasional clunk when slowing down for traffic lights. I assume the clunk is caused by the transmission downshifting and taking up the slack in the driveline right? I don't know how you guys can get used to it. Is there a Land Rover support group for guys freaked out by clunks?

I have the same problem your having Craig, especially with the kickdown. The clunk is normal to a certain point. My clunk has gotten progressively worse, though I do have 104,000 miles and a 2in lift. I was worried so I took it in and the shop I go to says I need a new T-box front prop shaft and bearing which sounds about right with the first half of the posts. |

I talked to my local LR dealer and they said when you add together the backlash from all three diff's and the tolerances from the remaining driveline components how could you not expect the occasional clunk. I guess I am just a little paranoid just having bought the D2 to replace my D1 which was suffering from the transfer case spline wear problem. The grass is always greener on the other side right? |

I remember hearing the clunk right before my transmission grenaded. Something about seized muffler bearings and worn piston-return springs. If you haven't changed your blinker fluid recently, I'd give your trannie (suck it, Kyle!!!) three more days 'till it's toast. Sell it quick and start fresh with a new Disco. |
