I mean on a trail. I'd like to be able to get home if the hydraulic winch fails, or indeed of the steering box or pump failed. George had recommended looking for a shorter serpentine belt so I could just undo or bypass the PAS pump. Anyone know if this size belt is available for a D2?

And also what would happen if the steering box / pump ran dry - how long could I still drive? Anyone had one fail like this?

TIA

Dean

The box will still turn without the pump, for how long, I dunno, the only caveat is that you cannot turn fast (unsafe on road) and the shaft is not designed for the stress of manual use.

Ron

PS have you considered fitting a second pump in the ACE pump location, or even using an ACE pump?

Ron - I was really asking how long the pump would run before it would sieze up without an oil source.

As for your PS, well the vehicle is new(ish) still so I'll see how it goes on the PAS pump. If that's no good I'd probably look into going PTO.

Dean, After reading your post regarding the hydraulic fittings, I'm not quite sure I understand how you are going to rig your winch. On my Disco 1, its a very simple install: remove high pressure line, install fittings on pump and steering box, connect the lines from pump to winch & winch to box. As an added precaution, I bring along my old high pressure line if something goes bad on the winch end and carry a couple quarts of ATF.

What will become obvious after using the winch, is that either a PTO pump/system or a higher rated pump is necessary.

Mike, that's how I did mine. Only the adapter kit that came with the winch didn't fit so I had to make my own. Also you're probably right I'll have to upgrade, but I'll wait and see since the D2 pump is rated higher pressure than the D1, a full 1500 psi.

dean's question is simple. what can he do if his PS pump quits

dean, i dont know , but i drove my range rover about a mile without PS fluid and it was scary as hell. could barely turn the wheel under 25mph
