I have a '95 Disco with a fried alternator. It went completely in the middle of the toughest part of the Crown King trail. Fortunately we were able to jump it a few times and limped home. I am pretty sure they won't be able to rebuild this one as it was smoking pretty badly for awhile and this wonderful black stuff oozed out of the holes (melted plastic maybe?) Had no choice but to limp out as we were too far in to turn around and it would have been impossible to tow out. What is everyone's experience with rebuilt vs new? I had my starter rebuilt and had a couple problems with it that have since been fixed. I am leery about going that way again. suggestions on where to buy one? Also, could I have screwed up anything else in the process of limping home? The engine ran fine, but the battery light was on and the tach and radio weren't working. Help?! |

I personally would rather spend a little more and get something that won't die even if abused with winch, etc. Don't know what you drive but Mean Green and Premier Power do not currently carry alternators for my '89 RRC so I went with MechMan. Go to: http://www.mechman.com They are pricey though! |

Wow they are pricy!, you might want to look into calling napa, my alternator came from them 25k ago no probs, i have winch ect, anyway, the price was right, and it came with a lifetime guarantee, the local elec motor rebuild guys aren't to good around my way, had a few items rebuilt 2-3 times withen 5k miles, so that why i use napa as well, Good luck! |

I bought rebuilt from Nathan for $250 with warranty. Took two tries as the regulator wouldn't regulate on the first one. Nathan says he's had good luck with them generally. First I had a local shop do mine. They charged 200 and I had a short in it as they didn't replace the complete regulator. After 6 mos of arguing I just got a factory rebuild. You'll fijnd a few posts where people bought new (ouch! $500 ?) and they still don't work. |

Parts for Rover alternators are available from RAM Electric for a reasonable price if you can't find a new or rebuilt one and have to have your local alternator shop rebuild it. ---Norm |

Joe I am interested in your alternator but do not know what a reasonable offer is as I do not know what brand it is. I've shopped around and seen 'em new from $130 to $400. What is it, whaddya want for it? You have any other way of contact (email, phone) other than posts? |

speaking of rebuilding.... A buddy of mine just came to the states from Peru, SA. He is a heavy truck (diesel rigs) mechanic. He has rode on some of the toughest roads in South America. He said that if your alternate broke on the road.. you had with you copper wire and the carbons (?) to rebuild it on the spot. I was amazed at this as he was when he learned my old man just buys new ones and replaces the dead alternators on his rigs. His stories remind me of Camel Trophy expeditions. Deep Jungle/ Mud/ Flat tires/ Guerillas... He seemed to like my truck. LOL. |

He was most likely referring to the brushes which are typically made of a carbon material. The majority of alternator failure is the brushes get worn and they stop making contact on the armature and the alternator stops producing electricity. Extra brushes are easier to carry and take up a lot less room than a whole alternator and will take care of the majority of alternator failures. |

I'm guessing most D1 Alternators failure is in the electronic regulator pack which ain't gonna get fixed on the roadside. |

T, cool info... the limiting factor south of the border, in Peru anyways.. is the parts are sold in US$. That makes it hard to buy replacements when u can rebuild at a much cheaper price. I'm following these guys doing a trip at www.ihana.com thru South America Ah.. someday. |

Interesting trip. Don't these people have to work? I would suspect when doing a trip like they are doing, you become creative and inprovise when you can or need to.
