Hey John- Rodeo or Trooper? How do you like it? I have considered getting one because they are so cheap to buy pre-owned. They are all over VT but the older style Trooper which I prefer are always all rusted up. Are they easy to work on? S- |

It's a 1998 Rodeo with 57K miles. My wife and I bought it new. I have not had any problems, knock on wood, other than this blown seal. Other than routine maint. I haven't had to do a thing. It's plenty fast (V6) and decent on gas (22mph). Very plasticy, and spartan. Ours is a base "S" model. Nothing to complain about, other than it's kinda boring! One good thing, I found out that Pep Boys had plenty of inexpensive parts! -John |

Hey S, I had a '96 Trooper as my first car and I can verify that they are excellent vehicles for that purpose. The storage space is much greater than that of the disco and the rear door setup works very well. Very reliable trucks. Easy to drive, comfortable, and very affordable. The thing to watch out for is the hydraulic lifters. The cam shafts in those engines have very small slits for the oil to get into the lifters and they clog very easily. What happens then is a clicking sound in the engine. The cam shafts wear a lot as a result of this and it's close to 3K to get fixed at a dealer. My dad and I rebuilt the uppper half of the engive for about $1500, but it was much work. You may get a really good deal on one with this problem and then get it fixed to save some money, or you could just make sure you find one that doesn't have the problem. Always use synthetic oil in those trucks. Any more questions just let me know. Brad |

Thanks for the information on the engine. The older square boxy Trooper appeals to me because of the roominess and utilitarian looks. I would use it just as a winter beater and landfill runner ect. It's funny there are now so many generic SUV's it's getting confusing which is which. Of course as we know only the Land Rover sets it's self apart from the crowd! (or maybe it's the leaking oil trace) S-

S, I originally wanted one of those troopers as well, but am really glad that I went with the newer truck. I don't know about the engines on the older trucks. Good luck |
