'97 D1 After the truck has been running for a while and is then turned off for a short while, it emits a horrible smell when restarted after resting for about 5 minutes. I first thought Catalytic Converters, but they were just replaced under warranty to no avail. Anyone have an idea what it is? I searched the archives and didn't find anything. If anyone knows what I should search for to find the answer just give me the key words. thanks, Brad |

You didnt happen to fart in the seat and then get out of the truck, did you? You know, that perforated leather can really absorb a good gas blast, so that the next time you sit in the seat ***POOF*** |

Definately not the cats....just got replaced not 300 miles ago under warranty. Anyone know how to check if the O2 sensors are still good without paying LR 95 bucks? |

Definitely is your cats! Have you been using the wrong fuel? Looks like a trip back to the dealership. |

The rotten egg smell is the sulfer in the fuel not being completely burnt through the cats. What was wrong with the original ones that needed replacement? Since leaded fuel is no longer available, the posioning the cats with lead is no longer a problem. But if the engine is running really rich, then it could burn out the cats pretty quick. Since it's under warranty, I would take it back to the dealer and have them check it out. |

TBOWs on the right track, but chances are is that the muffler or resonator have collected the excess fumes also and have not gotten hot enough to burn off. yep back to the dealer. marc |

So what should I tell the dealer? Also, is the muffler covered under the same 7 year/ 80,000 warranty as the cats? |

fix the cat problem; the muffler/resonator isn't the issue |

Well what could be causing the problem in the cats if they're new (less than 300 miles old)? No chance it's the oxygen sensors? thanks, Brad |

Forget the cats. Have them concentrate on the cause of the rotten egg smell. Your probably running too rich and it's overloading the cats ability to burn off the execss fuel thus giving you the rotten egg smell. If you run it much longer, you'll need new cats again. Once you solve the fuel problem, the cats will fix themselves. |

Are they gunna charge me for looking to see what is causing the rotten egg smell? Cuz that would just suck worse than rotten eggs. I agree the engine is running too rich, cuz the gas milage has gone down dramatically. Would a bad 02 sensor cause this? Truck has 70,000 miles on it. |

Tbow is probably right. The problem is probably not only upstream of the mufflers, it's upstream of the cats too. Are those original O2 sensors? You might want to order 4 of those O2 sensors, install, and see what you get (about $80 each). |

70K miles, it's out of warranty. I doubt that the O2 sensors are the problem, becuase they are hooked into the computer, they would put out a check engine light. If I had to make a SWAG (scientific wild ass guess) I would bet you got a leaking injector, it's about the only thing that can put in the kind of fuel that would cause such a problem and not kick on a check engine light. BUT don't take my word on it because at 70-80 bucks each, it's a 640 dollar gamble. Is the engine running rough? |

No, the engine is running fine. Yes, the only thing still under warranty is the exhaust system. I may try running over to the dealership here and ask if I can talk to some of their techs to see what the problem may be. They've been decent about talking about stuff before here in Charlotte. |

blue has a very valid point, does it show signs of a bad leaking injector? such as hard starting 15min after a sutdown from warm running temp? do you always use fuel from the same vendor?....might be bad fuel...some parts of the country still have agricultural fuel that has a lead content in it....might be some one is cheating and spiking there no lead to save money. I havent heard of people doing this for over a decade but here in the midwest it used to happen all the time because the leaded fuel cost much less then the unleaded. lots of people suffered the rotten egg smell and fried cats as a result. |

I don't know how to check if a fuel injector is leaky but I'll look into it. I buy from a variety of sources and always the same smell, so I doubt that's it. It doesn't start hard 15 min after shutting down either. It just cranks right up and it's obvious it's putting too much fuel in the mixture. Thanks for the help! Brad |
