What is the story with landrover parts? I priced a shortblock at a dealership in NJ for $2242.00 and a dealship in Long Island NY wants a little over $2900.00.Whats up with that? Can they do as they please as far as pricing is concerned? This is definately not cool,as in major ripoff. Can anyone out there shed some light on this subject?

what's the dealer's overhead rent cost for their building in NJ vs. NY?

they can charge whatever they want - paying it is up to you.

It is definitely a free market, and they can charge whatever the market is willing to bear (and then some in some cases). The best way to exercise your right to choose in a free market economy is put in a bit of time to find yourself the best deal.

The dealers in Scottsdale AZ regularly mark up their parts by 20-30% (and even more) ABOVE MSRP because they essentially have a monopoly here, unless you are willing to order mail order or drive to CA or UT to get parts.

I had to replace the plastic fairing under my driver's side headlight on my Disco 1. Dealer here wanted over $45. I bought it online for $28. They wanted $120 for a new remote for the doors/alarm and I bought one on ebay for $50. It is a pain having to search around, but you can save yourself a ton of money if you put in the effort...and you learn pretty quickly where to return to find the best deals.

Caveat emptor...

I recall somebody posting that they had brand new shortblocks for $1200, maybe it was Will Tillery?

What truck do you have?

I can do a new 4.0 short block for $1200 to your door.

Cheers

Ron Brown is the man!! The hell with the local dealer, who quoted me 3,200 dollars for a short block..

I got one from Ron but it got damaged in shipping.. "NO PROBLEM" Ron got another one post hast without any questions. Long story short, 1,200 dollars short block to my door, plus 800 dollars in parts (cam, gaskets, valves, springs, guides, lifters) and machine work to the heads and one weekend later.. my 96 Jinxed Disco is back on the road.

The new 4.0 engine is REALLY smooth. Once I fixed the O2 sensor that got loose.

Ron, I hope you got the other engine back by now, if not let me know.

THANK YOU RON !!

Call Land Rover Denver East and ask for Craig Highland in Parts. I'm pretty sure they are quite a bit cheaper. Even with shipping you will save a bundle.

Usually the SB comes with cam and timing set, but for pre-96 Disco and RRC owners, the 4.0's cam lacks the provisions for a distributor drive. Maybe it does come with a cam and timing set, but for those owners of the vehicles I mentioned, it is of no use and has to be replaced.

No, the new short block did not come with camshaft or timing set but it did come with the crankshaft sprocket so you only had to get the camshaft sprocket and chain. The camshaft was 250 dollars and the timing chain and sprocket was only about 35 bucks.

Did you pick up a mild aftermarket cam, or a stock spec'd cam? I'm assuming the cam and lifters came to $250...

No, I went with a stock cam. DAP-Inc had the cam for 198 bucks, but they didn't have any in stock and it was backordered. So I bought the camshaft from performancemotorcars.com for 250 bucks. Believe it or not, it was a Genuine LR camshaft but more importantly they had it in stock. Lifters were about 6 bucks each.

I checked with crower, they quoted me 295 US plus shipping.. because for them the 4.0 with the GEMS was a special billet which they would have to order, plus they didn't have any in stock and would take 3 weeks. Also, it was not smog legal, so I didn't want any problems with emissions testing.

I see...I was assuming you were using pre-96 ancillaries and timing cover...my bad. (www.aluminumv8.com can get you a cam for around $160, but not for the 4.0/4.6 timing cover)

I know.. Trust me Jason, I checked EVERYWHERE for the best deal on a camshaft. I contacted Crower, Crane and D&D. 3.9's no problem camshafts galore. 4.0 Gems.. Your screwed. The way this projects been going, I'm not surprised.

But bottomline, it all boiled down to availability.
