1988 RRC 3.5l, 128k miles and sitting. Exhaust gases are present in the coolant. I did a compression test and all cylinders returned around 100 PSI. If a head gasekt blows, would there be a consistent drop in cylinder pressures all around or more likely between cylinders on one side? Could this problem be stemming from a faulty valve cover gasket or something similar (although how would exhaust gases enter coolant)? I don't want to tear it down and not solve the problem. Any help appreciated.

Hmm, my 88 RR with 90K miles has a compression of 155-160 on each cyl...

Don't know much about the compression but I did replace my head gaskets last year (Feb 02) when my coolant tank kept loosing anti freeze. Exhaust fumes were detected in the coolant also. Took me two days (with the help of an experienced friend) and under $300 to replace. We did use up 30 cans of carb cleaner to make sure all parts were cleaned. Got the parts from Atlantic British.

Good luck and keep us posted.

A blown head gasket often does not show up in a compression test. If you have combustion bubbles in the coolant you have one of three things - a dropped liner (junk engine); a blown head gasket; a cracked head.

I suggest you have the heads crack checked and surfaced when you do them.

As to the compression being 100 - how accurate is the gauge? Often I hear this from folks and we use our gauge and get 140. For that reason I would not put much stock in the number, unless you know the gauge to be good.

There is an article on our web site on doing valves under service > land rover > advise > carbon foul valve job

Along these lines...I'm looking at an 89 RRC, 3.9 with white smoke coming out of the exhaust. Owner says the engine has about 200k on it. My guess on this was cracked head or block, he thinks head gasket only. Any way to be sure without pulling the heads?
