i've replaced the pump on my '89, thanks to RRPN/East, and it worked great for a while. Recently, the steering wheel grew heavier, especially after starting cold in the morning. Fluid's there, no moaning noises, things seem to work - but not quite right.

last night, got the front end on the jackstands, and cycled the steering a few times back and forth throughout the range, just to make sure there's no obstructions and binding. did that once with the engine off, and once - with engine running. everything okay. After that, things seemed to go back to normal. What was it?

Also... I have never had the steering box apart, and never seen the blow-up diagram. The part that looks like the hard cover (in the front of the box, the first thing you'd hit with a rock if it was exposed) - is it a cover, or a piston? I noticed it moving back and forth quite a bit when the engine was off and the steering wheel was turned. Once the engine was running, the cover never moved. What the hell is that?

If I'm understanding your description correctly I think you're referring to the end cover for the rack piston.

Did your previous pump go catastrophic on you? Any crap floating around in fluid to damage your box or block hose or passages?

I'm unfamiliar with RRPN/East. Is that a new pump you installed? If not, you are welcome to my old pump if you need it-I just put a new one on. Let me know.

Greg,

as it turns out (courtesy of RRPN/East again), the cover i mentioned is called cylinder cover, and you are likely understanding it correctly.
Here's the picture
The part marked by "5" was moving in and out.
My previous p/s pump started to cavitate badly, and my present guess is that I did not bleed the system completely of all air trapped in the fluid when I replaced the pump. Somehow, cycling the steering lock-to-lock without and with the engine running seemed to have fixed the heavy steering issue (for now).
However - I still don't know if the cover is supposed to move; it does NOT move when the p/s pump is running.

I've never looked at that end cover when steering back/forth with engine off but your description makes sense. When pressurized, I don't believe that cover would move with piston movement. But I can imagine that it would with system not pressurized.
