I own a 95 Disco, and Im having trouble locking my differentials. The previous owner said that the transfer gearbox has never been used, so its expected to be a little stiff. I can shift it into Neutral, and 4 low, but i can't shift the stick to the other side of the "H", to lock the diffs. I looked at the basics on discoweb, and still can't figure it out. Ideas?

i suspect the linkage is all seized up. I have the same problem except worse... I can't move it at all. I plan to get underneath it and lube it up real good and give it a try.

How do I lube it? and how long does it take?

Looking up from under the truck you can see the linkage. The diff lock and hi/lo selector are two different selectors. Diff lock is the front one, it's a shaft going down into the box that rotates 1/8 turn or so to slide a collar inside the box that locks front and rear shafts.

The diff lock light is operated by a push pin switch that senses movement of the sliding collar. If the switch jams the lever will move but the case won't lock because it will be blocked by the jammed switch.

You need to get the linkage all oiled up so it moves free and them get that lever to turn. Sometimes you have to engage is major disassembly if it won't free up.

You may want to try filling the case with synthetic gear lube if the problem is in the case. The synthetic lube will clean some of the sludge that builds up in the transfer case. The D2 has synthetic in it and this is the reason that they move smoothly even if diff lock has never been used before.

I will warn you that it may cause the t-case to start leaking and the case may start to whine/ whine louder after it has been cleaned out.

Went to dealer, they said they would lube it, but sometimes it gets really really stuck, which constitutes new parts costing up around $360? what do I do?

I was able to see the linkage on the LT230 while it was out of the truck. its really alot more down there than I had initially expected. I now understand why there are problems do to lack of use.

My linkage was totally frozen when I got my 94 D1 last year. I took the console apart to get access to the housing. I removed the entire lever assembly and housing and cleaned out the corrosion and relubed everything. It was a fair amount of work but I feel confident that the problem is properly fixed.

A couple of tricky items were unhooking the emergency brake cable at the handle to remove the console and removing one of the clips on the linkage that goes down to the side of the transfer case. Also, there were several pop rivets that had to be drilled out to remove the rubber boot arount the CDL lever. They are quite large but I found replacements at the local hardware store.

Where should it be sitting in the H for normal highway driving? (I know get a manual .... ;)

Ok thats what I thought, but after having put it in 4LOW Locked and moving it back to what I thought was 4H unlocked (lower right) the center diff locked light stayed on ... weird no?

It was really darn stiff .. I got it in to 4 LOW locked without much difficulty, but I had a heck of a time getting it back out.

The diff lock light will stay lit even after you take it out of lock. This is caused by "transmission wind up". After taking it out of diff lock drive in reverse for 10-20 ft or so. The transmission will unwind and the diff lock light will go out.
