I am buying a 95 Disco off of someone. Are there lemon laws that protect me when buying from a private seller or is that just for dealerships?. When I sign the title into my name is there any protection from getting ripped off (regarding mechanical problems)after the sale is complete? Any links or advice on this matter is appreciated! Thanks, Glen

Caveat emptor...

Make sure the title is clean - no liens, salvage title, etc that the seller hasn't told you about. Other than that, not really much in the way of protection unless you get some kind of mechanical warranty or guarantee in writing from the person you buy it from (and don't forget to get it notarized), which most people are going to be unwilling to do anyways as it opens the door up to financial risk for them after they sell the vehicle. One alternative is to spend the money on an aftermarket extended warranty. They are pricey, but if you are the risk averse type, it may be a good path to take. IMHO, your best bet is to spend the money to take it to a reputable shop and have it looked at from top to bottom. Then if it meets your expectations, cross your fingers, pull the trigger and hope for the best...

Remember, it is an 8 year old truck - things will go wrong and will require maintenance.

I am constantly amazed how people think that they are someohow protected from being ripped off when buying a car. It is completly up to you to make sure a car is in good mechanical condition and has a clean title.
Once you buy the car its yours. You will find that even if the seller was completly fradulant in selling you the car you are SOL.
A cousin of mine has been sued 3 diffrent times by people to whom he sold cars with salvage titles and various other problems. He has never needed a lawyer and never stepped foot inside a courtroom. The cases never made it that far.
Buy the 95 disco. You will enjoy it if you learn to put up with the random problems that always pop up. Just remeber that it is always the buyers responsibility to know what theyre buying not the sellers responsibility to inform the buyer.
