I've got an '89 RRC that I got back in November. I've had a few mechanical problems with it that I knew about when I bought it. I've just replaced the alternator a couple of weeks ago and had new plugs put in about in December. My mechanic tells me that my flame trap vac tee and hoses are missing. It's been running great and is unstopable. That is until Tuesday evening. It started stalling on me everytime I came to a stop or even slowed down enough to make a turn. I got it home and let it sit over night. It started fine in the morning and idled as it should. I turn it off to drop my kid at daycare and then it won't idle anymore after turning it back on. I get to work, let it sit until lunch and play with it some more. It would start and run fine, but then stall after turnng it off and then back on. On the way home, I just kept it running. This morning, it is running great. I turned in on and off a few times this morning on the way to work and no problems idling. I filled up with premium and put in a fuel injector cleaner just in case. Does anyone have any ideas what could have caused this? |

Sounds like it might be the air idle valve. My 93 did the same thing when it warmed up - it would stall every time I stopped. Try cleaning it with brake cleaner - it's on the back of the intake plenum - passenger side, just disconnect it and unscrew it carefully. I ended up changing it out and it's been fine since. |

Steve, it sounds like you're refering to what I think is the stepper motor. I was thinking the same thing, and was going to try that this weekend. Even if that's not it, I don't think that I would hurt anything by cleaning that part anyway. Thanks for the suggestion. |

Yes, stepper motor, aka air idle valve. I got an oem equivalent from Autozone for $32 and it's worked fine so far. It's a Wells AC102 I think. I did, however, also get the base idle adjusted, it was a little low. |

Sweet! $32 is a whole lot better than the $140 or so I've seen for original parts. Thanks for the tip! |

My 89 does something similar and the stepper motor is relatively new. My truck either idles fine or it doesn't. If I start it and it stalls or idles low, I just turn it off. Then I turn the ignition on, but I don't try to start it, then I turn it off again. At that point I turn the ignition on and crank the truck and everything is great. I switched some relays around and that made no difference. This has stumped me for a couple of months. |

if you have a lot of miles on the 89 and the stepper motor swap doesnt fix it, start checking into the distributor.....i had to replace mine to correct the same type problem |

I'm going to work on the stepper motor this weekend, but the stalling has stopped. The engine is back to idling at it's normal rate and keeps on running. We've had a lot of rain lately, I'm wondering if maybe I had some moisture in the gas that might have caused it. |

My 89 went from idling low to idling high. I cleaned the stepper motor and still had the same problem. I then disconnected the battery for a minute or so and it has been fixed for 2 weeks. |
