I purchased a used Southdown steering guard and was curious if it would fit w/o removing the airdam? I know, remove it and trim the end caps. For now, will it fit? Any insight?

I have the Southdown and it won't impede your airdam. The airdam affixs to the bumper, the Southdown affixes to your frame.

That thing is bomb proof, you'll love it. now you just gotta take off that silly, worthless, airdam.

one more thing, I needed to remove the metal loops on the frame to make it fit. Make sure to have your sawsall or hacksaw ready to go.

Thanks Brian for the heads-up. I plan on attaching the brackets first and then attaching the plate (I think it bolts together). I figured that would be easier to attach. Any other hints?

yep, it all bolts together. The plate-to-bracket connection uses (or at least it did with mine) large allen head bolts but I can't remember size.

And if sometime down the road you want to put on an ARB bumber, it won't interfere with that either. Because I know that you do want to get rid of that airdam - just kiddin'

Loose the air dam. It looks much better without and surgically removing looks better than tearing it off on a trail and having to hack it off. I know giving up the fog lights is a hard decision.

Okay. So I get the guard and there is no feasable way to make it fit. No amount of cutting, bending, or anything will allow the brackets to fit into place. I'm going out (i'm at work) at lunch to measure the distance between the holes that are used to attach it to the frame. I believe that I've received the wrong one. One hole is used to attach it to the lower bolt that holds the bumper on. The other fits toward the rear. It seems to be about 6-8 inches short of any close attachment point. Brian, can you possibly measure the distance between mounting holes on yours? That would really help. Thanks.

did a measurement of the driver's side bracket on my 98 DI, the holes are about 12.5 inches apart. and yep, the lower hole that holds on the bumper is used. installation was very straight forward for me, and i'm pretty much an idiot.

I measured the holes. They are 9.5 inches apart. So, there is a problem. I knew I wasn't THAT crazy. Guess it's time to make the return/exchange. Thanks for your help Brian!
